So much power in such a tiny box!

review by johnny rook

When I receive the card in the mail, I was surprised with the box size. I knew people were reporting the GTX 780 cases to be quite small but, I wasn't prepared to smallness of this PNY box. I have an old GTS 250 box laying around that's bigger than that.

Anyways, I was so skeptic about this card's power, I really was. I know it is the best an ordinary man like myself can have - TITAN is above my league -, but I thought that only a let's say, GTX 670 SLi setup could manage the stereoscopic 3D gaming I want. And I was so not in the mood for multi-GPU.

As I was testing the PNY XLR8 GTX 780, playing some games, doing some benches, my expression went from a dark doubt to a bright smile. And that only sweetened my experience, only made it better.

The GPU I got in the lottery clocks 1170Mhz Core / 3350Mhz Memory 100% stable on stock voltage and power target, which is really fine, beating a stock TITAN pretty much out-of-the-box.

I was about to give 4.5 stars and not 5 because the card BIOS. Is just to conservative for a GTX 780, imo. I do not mind, really. I want to play safe for the first few months. But then, I remember, is just a case of BIOS flash, right? The card final score shouldn't suffer from something so "fixable".

For those guys that are all about benchmarking and OC, the way this BIOS was designed is not overclock-friendly when extra voltages are applied because of the limits imposed.
I.e. Max Boost Clock is 1202MHz only, when we have several GTX 780 well above that mark: several ASUS and EVGA models have 1228.5Mhz boost, EVGA SC ACX has 1306.5Mhz and Inno3D has an astonishing 1346Mhz. Note that the PNY is not the only card with 1202Mhz. Zotac, Gainward, Gigabyte and Palit also share same limits.

This card is really quiet on stock clocks and fan profiles.
Is the most quiet high-end reference design card I have ever owned or heard running live. Period.

All in all, the PNY XRL8 model isn't more noisier than any of the other GTX 780 reference design competitors.

The card came with a 3 years warranty for European part #GF780GTX3GEPB and a lifetime warranty for American part #VCGGTX7803XPB (registration required)

Also bundles a Free Pandaren Monk Pet for WoW (European part #GF780GTX3GEPB)

The GTX 780 exceeded my expectations by a solar year! It is an awesome card and I am so glad and thankful I got one, is unreal.
