Great performance

review by jlhawn

Upgraded to this PNY GTX 980 from a GTX 970, this is a reference gpu but it overclocks great. I have never owned a reference graphics card that overclocks as good as this one.
I can run max settings in games and can even crank up more settings in nvidia control panel. I'm running 2 29" ultra wide screen monitors with this gpu.
I have overclocked it with it's stock bios and running stock voltage, I have been able to reach 1533mhz boost and 2000mhz vram with no problems, runs very stable in games and benchmarks and stress testing.
If they would have given this gpu a larger power phase I feel it could reach 1600mhz easy.
here are benchmark scores at both stock core clock and overclocked core clocks.

stock

overclocked

here are the settings using msi afterburner for reaching 1533mhz

and here is a valid gpu-z run of the overclock

I was able to run very high settings in all my games, here are the settings I was able to use, this one is crysis2.

I was able to reach 1585mhz overclocking but at least 3 out of 5 games the graphics driver would TDR,
this is not the fault of the gpu itself but a fault of not being able to up the core voltage more.
EDIT: I raised the voltage slider in Afterburner to +40 and the 1585mhz core clock does not TDR in the 3 games, my goof up there.

I have always owned PNY graphics card due to the lifetime warranty they offer, although I have never had to use the warranty as the product has never failed on me.
I still have 2 GTX 580's and 2 GTX 680's in my parts closet.
I did however buy a Gigabyte GTX 970 when the 900 series was released but only because all the 900 series cards were selling out faster than they could be manufactured.
when I got this one I had to wait 2 weeks as they were out of stock
I am very happy now that I am back with a PNY graphics card as I know it will give me years of trouble free performance.
you will have to create a fan profile using msi afterburner as this card will get warm due to it's reference cooler, or you can get the PNY factory overclocked GTX 980 which has a great 2 fan cooler,
a friend of mine has that model.
PNY just makes great products and I have seen they don't get as much notice as the other brands, so trust me PNY is a good brand, I have their ssd's, memory, etc and never any problems.
I only wish they made motherboards.

ProsCons
PNY, warranty, overclocks great, looks sleek and clean, having 6 pin power connectors limits overclocking, needs a 8 and 6 pin power phase
