This means you can add awesome special effects to your keystrokes, configure your keyboard to highlight your in-game and application key bindings, your modifier keys, your macro sequences and cool downs, your system controls, and much, much more. The included software development kit ensures that only your imagination is the limit.

KEY CONFIGURATIONS TO SUIT EVERY GAME
With the Ryos MK Pro, Easy-Shift[+]™ becomes the completely remappable easy keyboard. Together with the Easy-Shift[+]™ and FN keys, you can assign a secondary key function to virtually every key on the keyboard, to suit every game and key configuration. ROCCAT Ryos MK Pro Review

review by williamgayde

ROCCAT's Ryos MK Pro is their top of the line gaming keyboard. It features two micro controllers with one designated specifically to lighting. ROCCAT offers it in red, blue, black, and brown switches. It features N-Key rollover, programmable macros, and a software suite, but that is standard today for a gaming keyboard.

The box is very large and informative. The front gives an overview of key features as well as each section of the keyboard.

The back is also very informative listing the same key features in many languages.

Included in the box is the keyboard and an installation guide. If you need to use the guide, you don't deserve this keyboard. Just plug it in and it works.

Here is a closeup of the keyboard.

Here is the front of the keyboard. Note the thumbster keys and the dotted material.

With the key caps removed we can clearly see the switches, Cherry MX Black in my review unit, and the blue LED.

The top corners of the unit are slightly rounded. The left features headphone and microphone passthroughs while the right features 2 USB passthroughs.

The bottom features several large rubber pads, rubberized risers, and grooves for cable management.

The cable feels very high quality. It is braided and terminates in dual USB connectors as well as headphone and microphone.

Performance 5/5
The keyboard feels great. It feels very high quality. There is very little flex to it. Even with complex macros and lighting patters I never noticed any performance issues. The dual 32-bit ARM processors really helps. Like I said before the unit is available in 4 different switch colors: Red, Black, Brown, and Blue. Here is a full overview of each color. Here is a quick overview: Reds are very easy to actuate and provide no tactile bump, Blacks are very smooth and require more force, Browns are easy to push and give a tactile bump, Blues are very tactile , noisy, and actuate half way down. Browns are my personal favorite but blacks are a close second.

I really enjoyed the ability to record macros to any key. I programmed my high use programs which allowed for faster execution. The software, which I will go more in depth in later, is very powerful and I actually felt it gave me an edge while gaming. I could program complex macros and easily see what button they were mapped to. The Easy-Shift [+] button cuts down on the number of commands you have to memorize and allows for 2 functions per key. Moving down to the non smudge coating, it feels great and doesn't smudge. It should keep looking new after many months of usage.

Usability 5/5
The MK Pro is very comfortable and easy to use. The wrist wrest comes at a comfortable setting for me, but it may not be perfect for others. This was one of my small issues. The wrist wrest makes the keyboard very large. It comes in at 20" x 9" x 1.5". It did not fit in my keyboard tray and won't fit in most. A removable one would have been nice, but it's not that big of a deal.

The Per-Key Lighting is really cool. Although it shows up purple on camera, it is a light blue color. I spent a good 2 hours playing with constantly being amazed at what it could do. It is fun but I can also see it being useful for remembering what macros you have programmed or, with further integration, for displaying game stats like health or ammo. I personally used it to display what macros I had programmed when the Easy-Shift [+] button was pressed. Following this same idea, you can set different profiles to different illumination to make sure you have the right profile for the right game. You can also have fun with it.

The thumbster keys are placed in a very good position that does not require strain. Along with the them, the F-keys also have special functions. They allow for volume control, media control, macro recording, brightness control, and for launching some Windows applications. Many keyboards today have dedicated media keys, but there is no space on the MK Pro so they were incorporated into F-keys. As with all other keys, they can be reprogrammed if you wish.

Software 5/5
The ROCCAT Ryos MK Pro comes with its own software. It took a few hours to figure out how to use all of it, but then it was easy to do anything I wanted. The software allows for the control of nearly every aspect of the keyboard. The main page lets you configure the main features of the keyboard like brightness, enabling certain keys, and what function the caps lock key will work as.

Moving to the key assignment page. Here is where you program the functions of each key. For example, I have the W key, with Easy Shift, set to open Microsoft Word. I did the same thing for "P" but it opens Powerpoint, and so on with commonly used programs. This is the extra feature I use most.

The key illumination page is where the fun is. You can program different effects for keys, turn on/off different layers, set keys to illuminate when other modifier keys are pressed (shift, control, alt, win, Easy-Shift), and program LED macros.

Here is the macro editor. You can set key macros as well as LED macros. The key macros are pretty straight forward: a combination of keystrokes with certain delays in between. The LED macro is unique. You can set certain patters to be displayed when the keyboard is asleep or when certain buttons are pressed.

The MK Pro is also compatible with ROCCAT Talk which allows for communication between ROCCAT devices. If you had multiple devices, you could link them so their functions could build of each other. I have my Kone XTD mouse set to turn Easy-Shift on for the keyboard. The possibilities are endless. The only complaint I could have with the software is that there is too much of it. There is a different program for each device, another for Talk, and another for their Power Grid software. I would love to see one "ROCCAT" software which encompasses all devices and features. as many programs can get confusing.

To finish this review, I love the ROCCAT Ryos MK Pro. I think it brings direct competition to the once king K95 by Corsair. They both have features the other doesn't, but in this price range, I would go with the Ryos any day. It is a great keyboard with lots of options for customization. It is easy to use, packs some great software, and almost every aspect can be tweaked to the perfect setting. This is one of the most expensive keyboards on the market. However, if you can afford it, buy it. You will never look back.

ProsCons
Mechanical with many switch options, Per-Key Illumination, Great software, I/O Passthrough, Nearly every key is reprogrammableWrist wrest can't be adjusted, Lots of different software required, Price
