Roccat Savu Review
by Arizonian

1. Scroll Wheel. Scroll wheel isn't really as noisy as some people make it out to be. It does make more noise scrolling upward than downward but the scroll wheel sounds and feels very solid. It's a bit noisier scroll wheel compared to the ones I own when scrolling UP but it's not the least bit distracting nor loud. To each his own preference, click or no clicks for a scroll wheel. I use the scroll wheel ALOT at work running through Excel spread sheets.

2. Plug n Play.I plugged the Savu in at work and was running default without software or even an updated driver needed. I'm not allowed to download any software on work network. Plugged the Savu in at home and loaded the driver, set profiles, changed some macros to cycle through DPI and Profile settings. Saved five profiles, lights, no lights, etc....

3. Non-slip grip. First mouse I ever picked up with that feel on the sides and surprisingly it's not bothersome to me at all. It's got a slightly grainy texture. After one day I find it easy to grip / hold the mouse different ways and easier to keep control. It does not attract finger prints anywhere on the mouse.

4. Size. Mid-size mouse right in between small and large does describe the mouse as stated by Roccat. Works well for my mid-size hand. Braided cord is lighter than other gaming mice standards which is a good thing this being a lighter mouse so the cord doesn't have much drag on the mouse. Gaming I found myself depending on what was happening in game grabbing the mouse in various claw grips and the mouse easy to manipulate quickly. Lower DPI I found no problems with large and fast swiping across the pad and did not lose control of this mid-size mouse.

5. Ergo Thumb Rest. The thumb rest on the left side of the mouse I found accommodating. If your left handed this mouse isn't for you because that thumb rest will be in the way. I didn't have to force the thumb into the groove as I changed some of my grips when grabbing the mouse fast, click, let go and back to typing. I can even grip it different ways without it hindering me.

6. Software. Very solid software. No bugs. Managing the mouse settings was easy. Color wheel works perfect and is a good example where keeping simple LED's have their strengths. Nothing fancy and nothing to mess up. "Roccat Talk" feature that come with options to enable or disable 'talk' allowed me to know which DPI I was in without having to scroll through them. Software does have to be active in order for Roccat Talk to work.

Main Control

Straight foward section and first page which provides Sensitivity Options, Vertical Scroll Speed, Horizontal Tilt Speed, DPI Switcher, Windows Pointer Speed, Double click speed with testing area.

Button Assignment

Macro assignements to specific points of the mouse including the secondary Easy+Shift assignments. Notice my profile I've reassigned Easy+Shift button #10 to Profile Cycle which default was 'Windows Mute' and button #11 to DPI Cycle which had no assignment. This allows me to cycle through profiles and DPI in each profile to my choosing.

Advanced Control

This page offers a variety of features. Advanced Sensitivity (X-Y Axis), Polling Rate, Color Control, Sound Feedback. Sound feedback is what Roccat calls Roccat Talk and will announce specified changes in the mouse as shown as long as the software is active. (Minimized in task bar). Color options provided solid, custom, and color flow which can be breathing or all lights completely off.

7. Build. Savu weighs 90g which I found to be a good mouse weight personally even though it's a bit lighter than I'm used to. Even at 90g it's actually heavier than one would think since it's smaller but almost as much weight as a normal size mouse. Armed with Omron switches and very solid A3090 optical sensor. All the clicks on the mouse feel well built.

Great optical sensor in the Savu if you can make the 400 / 800 / 1600 / 4000 DPI limitations work.

8. Easy+Shift. Macro options and it's a very good idea that works if you can get used to it and take the time to learn/remember the macros.Very impressed with all the options and so few mouse buttons. The side buttons are placed a bit awkward but it also is out of the way when handling the mouse more aggressive without accidentally clicking. When I first ready Easy+Shift I thought gimmick but turns out I love the fact I can double mouse functions. Good achievement for a mouse with few buttons which are placed out of the way from accidental clicking.

9. Achievements System Marketing IMO but I digress it's not part of this review. Since it does not effect performance or mouse in anyway it's neither a CON nor PRO.

Final Thoughts

Overall I find Roccat Savu very solid. Glad I gave the Savu a try and makes for a great gaming mouse at it's DPI settings 400/800/1600/4000.

Important factors are the mid-size, thumb rest, and non-slip grip sides have to work for you or this mouse will not be your cup of tea. If it does work, there's a new high end 4000 DPI optical in town and it's in a mid-size package called the Roccat Savu. thumb.gif

I'd speculate if this mouse came in a full size version like a Savu [+] (which doesn't exist at the time of this review) would rise to the top of the optical roost rather quickly. smile.gif

Edited to add: Some owners after months of owning the Savu have reported the non-slip grip surface rubbing off, leaving a smooth black finish. Those that had this happen have indicated it is a gradual deterioration and not noticeable. This did not effect their handling of the mouse as reported.
