An essential for any PC now days

review by maddox

SSD's for a while for me seemed like a overkill item. Why pay all the money for faster boot times. I have been debating buying an SSD for awhile now and with the new release of the Samsung 840 EVO series I thought I would make the investment and pick one up for my operating system and WOW. Ill go into detail more on the pros and cons I bought up

Pros
Easy to install

Since they are so small you need almost no room to fit one in. In my case I have tonnes of room so it was no problem and it comes with the mounting screws as well. The only thing is you will need a 2.5 to 3.5 bay adapter if you want it to slide or screw into your normal bays but these are a couple of bucks but if your tight on cash you can just have it sitting in the case

Very Affordable

When I started to look at SSD's about 2 years ago they were quite expensive and for me not worth the money. Now days though you can pick these up for $100 bucks and this one can compete with some of the best speed wise. For what it does to your PC thats the best $100 you will spend on your PC

Very Fast

As I said this new version of the 840 series has ramped up the write speeds to be on par with some of the best. They are abit slower in these 120gb models but you wont notice it at all. What it means for your pc though is not how fast it takes from pressing the on button to windows loading but the time it takes from windows loading to my computer being usable. Before it took 2 minutes or so before I could use anything but now it is only 2 seconds and everything is open and my computer is fully functional. Any programs that are installed on the ssd you will also notice are super fast and things like Adobe software this is very noticeable.

Looks Great

It just does. The gunmetal grey looks way cooler than the black/orange combo from the old series

Cons

Crappy Software

This is the main draw back for me. The software comes across like you can plug it in and transfer your os across but it aint that simple. If the OS drive has more stuff on it then the ssd can take it offers you the option to leave things out. The only problem is you can only leave behind media files and for someone like me who most of my os drives space is taken up by steam I cant select that. This means I had to back up 300gb+ worth of stuff then delete it all of the hdd before I could move the os. If you are installing an ssd into a new build this isnt a problem because you would simply install the os directly onto it but otherwise get ready to spend hours backing stuff up before transferring your os across

Overall the Samsung 840 EVO is a great drive for the money offering high level speeds and is almost a must have in any PC old or new now days. If the OS transfer software was abit better I would give this higher but I still highly recommend this SSD.

ProsCons
Easy to Install, Very Good Price, Fast, Looks GreatCrap OS transfer software
