...the fastest SSD just got faster!

review by krsboss

I have owned a lot of SSDs from my first Corsair R120 which cost over $400 at the time through OCZs, Sandisks & Plextors...RAID configurations and a PCI-E SSD, however I have been very happy with my 512 GB Samsung 840 PRO. Though there is not a massive amount of real world difference in performance across the range for daily needs and it is difficult to really differentiate, the 840 EVO series brings something new....RAPID mode!

For those who are unaware, RAPID mode uses up to 2GB of your system RAM as a cache for the SSD. What this basically means is that the things that you use regularly, will be cached to your RAM for super fast access, which depending on the speed of your RAM can lead to a real world performance increase of x10!

As an example whilst in RAPID mode, I ran AS SSD and got a score of 2312 (which in itself is a pretty crazy result). However running it another couple of times gave me a score of 8997! In comparison, my 840 PRO scores 900-1000

When comparing it to the 840 PRO, the EVO is a little shy on the IOPS side, however the boosts from RAPID mode basically cover any downfalls and more!

I bought a 250GB version to use as a dedicated SSD for steam / games, however it is available in 120GB, 500GB, 750GB & 1TB varieties as well.

As I said at the start, I have used a lot of different SSDs, but none of them have got me excited like this has...go Samsung!

ProsCons
RAPID mode, 7mm wide, high capacity (1 TB) availableIOPS a little low in comparison

I literally just bought this drive because of what appeared to be great (if not a little overwhelming) technological achievements with this drive (the EVO).

Interestingly, I was in a similar space: comparing the PRO to the EVO. Have you felt the IOPS shortcomings (When compared to the PRO), and any tips that you would offer someone with this drive?

Blazing Speed & Affordable Price

review by terrere

I purchased this in addition to a new Lenovo laptop to give me a good speed boost. The laptop came equipped with a 5400 RPM mechanical drive... Ewww, no. Just, no. My plan was to get an additional Ultra-Bay adapter and use the 1TB 5400 RPM drive for a data drive and just pop in the DVD drive whenever I needed while using this as my primary drive. I purchased this drive and prepared myself to clone.

For anyone familiar with cloning, moving data from a 1TB drive to a 250GB drive can be a bit of a pain, even if the data usage is ~100GB. Most cloning devices will refuse to clone down that far. After failing 4 different types of clone, I was pretty discouraged. Normally, the cloning software included with drives can be a bit... buggy. Since it had been no joy with my cloning devices at work, I decided that maybe the Samsung software would work for my needs. I installed the Data Migration software and used my external USB hard drive dock to connect to the blank SSD. The Samsung Data Migration software is likely built off of Acronis, because the suite is very simple to use and strongly resembles Acronis software I have used in the past.

The software quickly moved my selected drives to the SSD. The drive booted, a little slowly at first because the BIOS was working on getting the SSD configuration correct. I booted up and restarted and it got a hair faster, but still was only at about 7200RPM boot times. I scratched my head and looked at my settings, nothing out of the ordinary. I then decided to try to go 2 for 2 with the Samsung software. I installed the Samsung Drive Magician software and let it do the optimization for performance. Restarted and went from a 20 second boot to under 10 seconds consistently.

For the price, these EVO drives are blazing fast and come with USEFUL software. The Data Migration software works well and the Drive Magician can give you all kinds of important statistics as well as help you optimize your drive for the performance you would prefer. I recently replaced this drive with a larger 750GB EVO because 250GB was not enough space for a main drive on a laptop. I needed the extra space that I originally didn't plan for.

ProsCons
High data transfer speeds, useful optimization software, cloning software included, priceNone that I'm aware of
