Not a bad card at all

review by snorbaard

I bought my Sapphire Radeon HD 6850 1 GB right after my Radeon HD 5770 stopped working. I used to play a lot of games but lately not so much, although I did test this card with some of the newer game titles such as Metro 2033, Crysis 2 and Witcher 2, and I was overall impressed with this card. Although some games struggled at ultra specs this card still stood its ground and I was solidly impressed. For a casual gamer this card is really good enough.

Its stock speeds are slightly overclocked at 820 MHz for the core and 1100 MHz for its GDDR5 memory. I typically overclock mine to at least 940 / 1145 for every day use, since I play TF2 every now and then. Although I hardly see a point in overclocking for TF2 since I already hit around 300 fps, I just take the set-it-and-forget-it approach to overclocking it a bit more. A nice feature is the ability to set the core voltage.

Now the fan. Under normal circumstances the fan is really quiet and generally inaudible, however during gaming sessions it can spin up to quite loud levels. I measured the sound pressure levels of my opened up case with the fan on Auto in the Sapphire Trixx utility, (thus the fan was at low rpms) at a distance of 0.5 m. I measured 39 dBA. I then set the fan to 100% and measured a whopping 65 dBA at the same distance. At 50% fan speed the SPL meter measured 54 dBA. Though I don't think normal gaming would ever really push it beyond this level. I do like the fact that the fan blows the hot air out at the back of the case using the adjacent pci slot.

Something to keep in mind is that this is the longest graphics card size that I know of, and it also takes up a solid dual slot space for its entire length. It would definitely not have fit in my previous case. Furthermore, this graphics card also requires 2 x 6 pin pci-e connectors for power.

Speaking of power, I run this card overclocked with my overclocked core i5-2500k (1.35 v, 4.4 GHz) with 4 hard drives and 2 ram sticks (also overclocked and overvolted) and I think the maximum total system power draw I measured with a kill-a-watt device was around 420 watts, this was while burning furmark and prime95. Even intense gaming drew much less power than that.

Lastly, this card comes with 2 DVI, 2 DisplayPort (v1.2) and 1 HDMI connectors at the back. The HDMI port can stream audio/video with up to 7.1 audio. Full support for DirectX 11, and stereoscopic 3D (3D video over hdmi, 3D gaming over DP 1.2).

ProsCons
Quality; performance; connection options; 3D power drawFan sounds like a jet at higher rpms; physically very large

Good card, so far

review by cloppy007

I bought this card to play BF3 since my old 4850 couldn't handle it. This card plays the game at auto settings (1280x1024) at a smooth average of 50-60 fps, which is what I was looking after.

It gets up to 70?C (fan @ 50%) in Furmark, which I consider great considering it does not sport a fancy aftermarket heatsink.

I'll keep this card until I can either get a good card for ?200 after AMD and nVidia releases their whole 7000/600 product line up.

Once thing worth mentioning is that this card only has one six pin PCIe power plug, and the PCB was not clean, there were stains of... something. I've seen the same in my 4850s.

ProsCons
Cheap, great price/performance ratioFeels cheap
