Pros: Standard SATA III drive; base allows other SATA drives to plug into it

Cons: Uses Memeo backup software; custom USB3 cable; spare cables do not seem available.

I saw this kit bundled together on Newegg with a PCIE 2.0 USB3 port. This is what I need, I thought.

I had been using a WD MyBook World Ethernet drive. As a drive it was nice, but the Memeo software that ran the backups was a kludge. Worse: it couldn't find the previous backup, so each time a user started the computer, we had to cancel what it was doing and start a new backup. Given that our relationship was with WD, not Memeo, you may imagine that we eventually gave up trying to get help. So I vowed my next NAS would not be WD. Hence, a Seagate this time.

In the interim I had installed internal backups, but that's no good if someone steals your rig (that happened to us once). We needed an external drive. Finally, I saw a 2TB kit I could go for.

Nice looker. And the HD is actually a SATA drive that sits on the adapter, like this:

Would it fit a bare SATA drive? Let's see:

Yup. I does. I could access this drive from my computer. Nice.

My sole complaint about the hardware part of the kit is that the USB3 cable is custom, and I have not yet found a way to buy more.

Overall: Meh. HD itself seems good. But the backup software seems useless.

Just wondering if you noted if the HD was sata ll or lll?
It's SATA III. Nice and fast.
If you're looking for another backup software, give a try to Duplicati. Backups are incremental and compressed. It's fast and easy to use.
