The box is very simple and details the specific mounting design included inside. The ARM22SC can support monitors using the 75mm, 100mm, or 115mm VESA standard. Prominently displayed on the box is a "Made in Taiwan" badge. If the weight of the package is any indication, that translates to extremely high quality construction. The components are all securely packaged to avoid any damage during shipping.
Inside the box is the base and clamp, the main support rod, two lower arm pieces, two upper arm pieces, a cable mounting clip, a metal ring, and a manual. I noticed some rather annoying white residue on all of the metal components. It was not easy to remove, but after some intense scrubbing and removal of Styrofoam bits, the parts were all clean. The very first thing I took note of about the product was its weight. All of the components were extremely well built and there was absolutely no give or flex in the arm components. Every aspect was clearly over-engineered.
The first step to assembly is to put the base and clamp together. They are solid steel and take 4 rather large hex bolts at the bottom to secure in place. Once you tighten them in place, with the included hex key, it's clear they aren't going anywhere. I noticed that hex key was slightly too short though1. Tightening the base and clamp together was a bit difficult since there wasn't quite enough room to rotate the bolts all the way. This is just an issue during installation and doesn't affect the product at all. After that you will need to screw in the main support rod. The threads on this are some of the longest I have ever seen on a computer accessory. Since this piece is what supports the weight of the monitors, it's not surprising that they wanted to be extra sure it wasn't going anywhere.
Here is the base and clamp attached to a desk. You will need a few inches of clearance behind the desk to slide the clamp on, but after that it only protrudes a quarter of an inch or so. The clamp can support desks up to 2" thick and monitors up to 22lbs each. There are two screws with very large washers for extra support.
The next step is to prepare the monitors. I will be using two 24” Asus VS248H-P monitors for this review. You will want to start by removing the included base and stand for your monitor. Some monitors may have a cover over the VESA mount as well so remove that first. Screw in the 4 corners of the VESA adapter to the back of the monitor. Make sure it is oriented correctly so the monitor isn't upside down. Both arms are made from what appears to be die-cast aluminum with plastic inserts and covers. Again, the robust build quality is evident in every component.
Once you have both monitors attached to the arm, it's just a matter of sliding the components on to each other and then on to the base support rod. Both lower arm pieces go on first, then the upper arms with the monitors attached go on next. You can also put a locking ring but it isn't really necessary. The individual height of each arm on the base rod can be adjusted with a small hex screw inset in the lower arm. I put the included cable routing sleeve on as well to tidy up the 4 cables. The arms themselves also have pathways for routing cables. Each upper arm has a removable plastic clip that keeps the cables from dangling. I was not a fan of the mechanism for this piece however. The clip and cables easily popped out when the arms or monitor were turned. The piece simply slides into place with a very weak locking mechanism. I would have preferred something that gripped a bit more. There is also a groove in the lower arm that the cables can feed into, although I choose not to use it. How you route your cables is up to you, but SilverStone gives many options. Here is the view from the back before cable management
The monitors can rotate freely about two independent vertical axes. This is how you would bring the monitors closer or farther from you, or move them left and right. The monitors can tilt up and down from -20° up to 90°. They can also rotate a full 90° in either direction to change from landscape to portrait mode. There are internal springs that help with the movement. They can be adjusted to balance the weight of the monitor with the tension of the spring. This makes adjusting the positioning very easy. Since a 23" monitor weighs much less than a 27" monitor, you will have to adjust these yourself. The springs are extremely stiff and this process took a good 15 minutes. It is a back and forth of tightening or loosening, then moving the monitor to match the tension. Investing some time into this at the beginning can make re-positioning very easy later on.
While you can get dual VESA monitor mounts for as little as $40, nothing comes close to the build quality of the SilverStone ARM22SC. The huge range of motion and customization in position is second to none. Investing a bit of time in calibrating the stand to your specific monitors makes this product a breeze to use. This stand is certainly not for everyone as it is well out of the price range for many home users. On the other hand, it is relatively cheap compared to some other professional VESA monitor mounts. The ARM22SC is a great tool to help reduce clutter on your desk. If a small footprint is valuable to you, then it is well worth the price. The ARM22SC is built like a tank but is extremely easy to use. I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a monitor mount in this price range!
