steelseries Merc Stealth

review by dumbazz
i've owned 2, its an awesome Keyboard. Its great for WoW and BF3. My First one, which i bought about 6 yrs ago doesn't have backlit keys, onboard usb and headset inputs, but it still functioned really well. Plus if i had to take it apart to clean the inside, it was very simple to put back together.
I can't imagine playing with another keyboard. i love the fact that it has a dedicated gaming side.
- 3 colors to choose from
- 2 usb ports
-mic/headset inputs
-customizable keys
- pre programmed layouts for many games

Great transition keyboard for a new to PC gamer....hard to let it go

review by thoth420

I am a gamepad type of guy so naturally I view keyboards a bit different. I grew up playing NES, SNES, Playstation etc. so when I transitioned to PC gaming I never really got used to the WASD. I would use the directional keys but that always left me lacking the extra buttons needed. As years went by games started to have more and more buttons and I feared that I would finally have to conform to what I considered more of a "workaround" of how to game on a device not originally intended for that purpose(a keyboard). I searched high and low and found the original Zboard made by Ideazon(now owned by Steel Series) and it was exactly what I was looking for. I used it for about 4 years and it wore out. I decided to try the new Steel Series reboot and I found what I consider the best gameboard period.
I have tested the g13, tartarus, orbweaver, belkin n52, sniperpad and just about anything else that claims to be a gamepad under the sun. However, the keyboard section is not amazing but if reserved for only being used to chat in games a non issue. It should be taken into account that other gameboards do not come with a keyboard(minus the early version of this board from Ideazon).

I am giving the gameboard section of this keyboard a 5/5 and have yet to find anything that can even come close to comparison in comfort and function.
The keyboard gets a 2.5/5 being rubber domed keys that are not mechanical and the orientation of a few keys is strange which may turn some people off.

ProsCons
By far the best (non mechanical) gaming surface 11 degree angled, Backlit, USB hubs, No software needed if default keys are enoughLength (very long and will take up about the space of a ten keyless AND gamepad on your desk, Out of production

Agreed on all of your comments. Great board. Really I wish SteelSeries would pay attention to it more and create a standalone version of the keypad. Even a barebones version would be amazing, as the original Merc Stealth was.

Then if they decided to create an uber version with mechanical keys, led backlight, usb hub etc, it would be one of the best keypads ever. I actually emailed them about this a while ago, they basically replied and said they weren't interested.
