Great Pump, loud

review by nomadskid

The Swiftech Maelstrom V2 dual 5.25" bay with integrated MCP50X pump is overall a good pump/reservoir. However let's start with some pictures

The Maelstrom comes in a glossy black box with Maelstrom and Swiftech branding written on the box. The Unboxing Process was fairly straight forward with the package containing the Unit, a manual/content list, a UV LED and a metal strainer.

As you guys can see, the unit is very well styled. The face plate is made from black anodized billet aluminum, while the brackets are made from nickel plated steel. The actual reservoir is listed as clear acetal, by which I think they mean acrylic, while the fill cap is just regular plastic(what feels to me like ABS). Finally, all of the fittings joints in the reservoir are brass. If you are interested in the dimensions of the Maelstrom V2, you're in luck, as I have found this image showing the dimensions.

By my standards, this pumps and res combo is relatively compact, it doesn't take up a ton of room like my previous D5 and single bay combo, and the room it does take up is very well used that in the fact that it's all in a close proximity to itself.- A giant rectangle(that's what I was trying to get at).

Now onto the pump itself, the MCP50X:

The pump itself is very small, but that doesn't matter too much considering that It's bolted to this reservoir. however Swiftech does offer a smaller tube reservoir that you can add onto just the pump itself.
The pump does feature PWM, however no matter how low you set the fan curve, silence is not going to happen, atleast not with my model. I always get a high pitched humming noise even when the pump is set to its lowest settings. However, while at higher settings, this pump can move a ton of water. Albeit, it is really loud while doing so.
My absolute favorite thing about this pump is the fact that it uses SATA. I wish every powered component would use SATA. Thank you so much Swiftech. This power connection is perfect. Keep using SATA!

Like I said in the beginning this is a good pump/res combo. I would easily buy it again, hopefully my next model will operate in silence however.
My overall product ranking for this would have to be 3.5 out of 5.

ProsCons
good flow rate, looks good, compactloud, awkward to fill

Nice review, thanks! I liked the previous version when they had a temp sensor in the bay res, good idea. The 50X does move a ton of water, hopefully there will be some tops from EK and others to make this useable with in a pump/res combo more than just the Swiftech res, its kinda ugly.
