Great heatsink with small quirks

review by alphac

PROS
  • This is a top of the line heatsink for the AM4 platform from Thermalright. It is rated for 360W TDP heat loads which is impressive given it is a single tower with only a single TY-147 fan (a max of 1300RPM). (Silver Arrow is rated 320W, Archon is rated 320W.)
  • RAM clearance which is a major issue with Ryzen systems due to all faster DDR4 modules coming with tall heatsinks is decent. With only two modules you can fit any height RAM. With the closest DIMM Slot populated I was able to fit EVGA DDR4-3200MHz, which are not low profile but more along the lines of 38 to 40mm total height. Just be aware the fan will touch the back of the RAM's aluminum heatspreaders if you do opt for tall RAM and populate 4 RAM slots.
  • It has six 8mm diameter heatpipes. The amount of heat transfer this provides is immense.
  • Relative to the current competition it is cheaper and generally quieter.
  • The base is flat and mirror finish.
  • The heatpipes are nickel plated copper.
  • The support plate at the back of the socket does not block the measurement points for CPU+SOC voltages.
  • Cabling heat shrinked and flexible braided cable sleeving for fan.

CONS
  • The fan clips are not as intuitive as they could be. The design also results in issues when adjusting fan height (Unlike Noctua , Be Quiet, Phanteks, Cryorig, Deepcool, or Scythe) It's puzzling since the fins could easily accommodate such a clip style that other manufacturers are using.
  • Due to the fan clip design, it is harder to take the fan off if you need to remove RAM or clean the heatsink with compressed air. Thermalright likely figured the roughly 2.5cm vertical adjustment once the fan clip is installed is alright.
  • 171mm height may be hard to fit in many cases
  • 155 width may intrude on PCI-e slot area due to lack of offset if your motherboard does not use the first slot for the non-GPU slot (i.e. PCie x1) , as it doesn't have an offset base
  • All screw packaging is not resealable and Intel + AMD mounting parts are mixed together in one bag. If you want to switch between an Intel system and AMD system then you will need to get your own plastic bags to hold the mounting screws.
  • Unlike Noctua , Phanteks, and Cryorig offerings which provide a reusable syringe, it has a packet of thermal paste which is not resealable. Actually some Thermalright coolers provide a reusable syringe so this was obviously a cost-cutting measure.
  • Some Thermalright coolers include the screwdriver (or wrench if that's what's needed) so you don't need to look for the proper size screwdriver , this cooler doesn't come with it
  • 1 year warranty although heatsinks don't fail generally
  • If you're lazy and don't want to measure things there's no motherboard compatibility list
Other
The label in the middle of the fan is removable. Be Quiet, Aerocool, Coolermaster, Scythe, Reeven, Raijintek, Corsair, Gelid, and Cryorig like to put the label on the front of the fan which I find tacky. Of course of those brands only Be Quiet is known to truly be quiet

.
There's a TR branding on the top of the frame and also the holographic sticker on the back of the fan hub (as well as on top of the heatsink base) so that is mostly free advertising.

ProsCons
Quiet, independent reviews have it as cool as a NH-D14 , price is $52 on Amazon, RAM clearance, AM4 Ryzen ready171mm height is a tight fit for some cases, thermal paste is not reusable due to the packaging, AMD+Intel mounting pieces mixed together, fan clips
