Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception Review

review by bobicon

Overview

Uncharted 3 is the third game in the series by Naughty Dog and it does not disappoint. This is a massive game with a lot of different areas of play covering deserts, Middle Eastern cities, castles and more. The story itself is not hard to follow even if you did not play any previous Uncharted games. Naughty Dog makes sure to cater to all players in this aspect. I should also note that the plot twists in this game may leave you somewhat confused, but it should all make sense by the end of the game.

While the 3rd person FPS series may seem played out Naughty Dog seems to bring a refreshing take on the genre by actually using a great story to drive a game instead of just game play, but don't get me wrong game play itself is also great in this game.

There are some points in this game where you will get frustrated and have to replay the part over and over again until you can kill a huge group of enemies causing you troubles, but overall I would say it isn't too difficult where you will want to give up.

The one thing I did dislike about this game (considering I rented it) was that the game itself requires a online game pass to play the coop campaign or the versus mode which in my opinion is just a way to gouge people for more money. I should also note that while I did not play the coop campaign I read that it is about 2-3 hours long.

Conclusion

Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception is a great game that I urge everyone to try. While I don't see a lot of people buying this game for the versus mode. It is a great single player story. While I don't agree with Naughty Dog's multiplayer pass for online game play approach. I will say that the single player more than makes up for the disappointment if you rent this game hoping to play online.

I would rate this game a 4.5 out of 5 if they did not require an online pass but because of this I will give this game a 4 out of 5.

ProsCons
Great graphics, voice acting and gameplayMultiplayer pass needed to play online

Uncharted is a rinse and repeat series that you can't go wrong with.

review by doomdash

If you already enjoyed Uncharted 1 and 2 this is a no brainer pick up for you. It's more of the same, with slightly little upgrades here and there. There is absolutely nothing wrong with just having slightly upgraded Uncharted games with all new stories, don't fix what ain't broke. This is not my favorite Uncharted, but really none of the Uncharted's are remotely disappointing so don't let that fool you. I think my favorite new feature was the ability to throw back grenades. If you are a fan of 3rd person shooters or exciting movie like thrill rides get the Uncharted series!

ProsCons
Great story, great voice acting, great movie like action, and great 3rd person mechanics.10-12 hour campaign. It has good MP though.

It's stale, to say the least

review by boredgunner

This might be the worst of the series, it's a close call between this and the first game. It's an interesting concept, cinematic storytelling combined with a mix of platforming and shooter gameplay. It's a shame that it relies on such primitive and inferior gameplay mechanics.

In terms of storytelling, it does what it set out to do. However these types of games are not moving in the right direction. Like other console games, Uncharted 3 tries to emulate a movie. The thing is, if people want a movie, they'll go see a movie. No game will ever come close to some movies in terms of quality. Games need to use their one aspect that film doesn't have; player choice, in order to establish themselves as a different type of media.

Unfortunately, lots of mainstream developers, especially on console, have yet to figure out how to use this to enhance storytelling. Even though many other games already have done it; Mass Effect series, Dragon Age series, The Walking Dead, and even The Witcher series and Metro series to a much lesser extent. I'm not asking for Uncharted to become just like those games, but it will never be one of the best story-driven games for this reason.

Gameplay is a mess. Uncharted 3 uses one of the worst mechanics known to mankind: unlimited waves of respawning enemies. As seen in Uncharted 2, and maybe the first game as well. Gunplay is a mess; the bullet count is ridiculously high, and there are exploits on every wall allowing you to shoot through walls. It's just uninspired and not entertaining; I had problems with the pacing too. They throw in so many lengthy shooting scenarios, when the shooting and general action of the game sucks.

AI is no good either, they use the same common mechanic of using cover to try to get as close to the player as possible. I don't know why so many games do this. Naughty Dog also had no idea how to make this game challenging; if you turn up the difficulty, AI just has ridiculously perfect aim, you die more quickly, on top of the nonstop waves of enemies. Total lack of creativity.

It's overly linear... I'm not asking for it to be sandbox or open world, since that changes the game. But if it looks accessible, it should be accessible. Uncharted always has invisible walls everywhere, and there's always only a single path to take. Again, this is something that really plagues console games.

There is no replay value in this game at all. Replaying it would mean doing the same exact thing again, living through the same exact experience. If you have a PS3 and are able to play it, then this game is a good bargain bin buy. Like other raved console games, such as The Last of Us and MGS, Uncharted 3 is stuck in the past. It belongs in the huge list of oversimplified modern games.

ProsCons
Great voice acting and soundtrackRiddled with gameplay flaws
