The Emperor Protects... but a loaded bolter helps
Pros: Brings the WH40k universe to life, Chain swords!
Cons: Short single player game... alot of walking
Anyone that has played Dawn of War will remember the initial cinematic of the battle between the Space Marines and the Orks, The frantic charge and clash of blades and bolters... Now, you get to play that heroic Space Marine in desperate battle against the Xenos!
I’ve been a fan of the RTS series since DOW and now I have the opportunity to unleash the Emperor's righteous fury in a first person shooter. You get to play as an Ultramarine, some see this as a negative but hey... apart from the armour livery, I don’t see a problem.
The story...you have been sent to a Forge world to stop an Ork invasion and save a Titan war machine. Its you and your two mates against the world!
The single player game is heavily scripted and linear and once you have played the game a couple of times, you know when and where the enemy will come at you. There is plenty of wargear to collect on the way... mainly weapons but you can also pick up Purity Seals which increase your Fury and give added perks to marksmanship. Did I mention jetpacks? I love jetpacks! Landing in the middle of a pack of Orks is quite devastating.
Your power armour is formidable by not infinite. If you don’t get a chance to recharge it but either activating your Fury or taking a break from battle, you will die very quickly. There is no manual saves, so you will go back to the last check point. Having said that, the checkpoints are frequent.
You have two companion Space Marines that can look after themselves but tend to do their own thing, so don’t rely on them to save your butt in a fire fight.
The single player game as a few twists and turns but you generally get an idea of who is going to betray you and who will be loyal. Hmmm... this guy looks dodgy, I wonder when he will stab me in the back...
Multiplayer is a hoot! Fast and furious. You can play as either a Space Marine or the heretical Chaos Marines. Weapon load outs and classes include Tactical marines, Devastator or Assault marines. So you can mix it up nicely. You even have the ability to take out a higher level enemy and adopt their weapons and armour. A nice touch in levelling up. There is alot of new MP maps coming online and are added as a free download. DLC... not a lot at this stage
Non WH40k fans can have fun and don’t require a knowledge of lore to play but I’d suggest this game is for one for the fans. Graphics, effects and Sfx are very good. Atmosphere is what you would expect from the WH40k universe - dark and forboding.
If you love the idea of charging into a horde of green skins or taking out some Chaos Space Marines with your power axe, you'll love this game.
3/5 flames.
