Description:
Introducing Waves, a twin stick shooter that can be played by anyone, but with a high enough skill threshold to keep even the most hardened shooter fan entertained.
Waves has been built from the ground up to be accessible, yet require mountains of skill to master. It cuts away the fluff and boils everything down to what's really important: Highscores.
Tis no secret I like making pretty things go kablooey. Be them cases of C4 stacked conveniently near an M-COM station or pigs casually sauntering about in Animal Crossing. All things must explode eventually. This (albeit frightening) internal drive led me to an intriguing thingamabob. An arena shooter known as...
WAVES.
On the surface, this puppy looks delicious. Particle effects are plentiful, enemies have sharp vector graphics, and explosions drip with sexiness. The game also has great audio design alongside a terrific chiptune soundtrack. Think Mario/Metroid tunes mixed with epic movie scores. I was expecting this game to give me a seizure of massive proportions (a'la Beat Hazard), but such was not the case! While there's quite a few lights and flashes flying around, it never gets overwhelming. The fact that you can spin around on a dime also helps tremendously. I really loved how you produce little waves underneath whenever you zoom around the arena. Little touches like that always warm the cockles of my heart.
All 4 of them.
What's that? You say you've never played an Arena Shooter? PHILISTINE! I highly suggest you learn fast because this game pulls no punches. Focusing on the hectic combat that made Robotron 2084 and every spiritual successor so much fun, WAVES will slap you till you act right. I'm not saying you have to be a God among men to play it, but your twitch reflexes should be fairly proficient. Make no mistake about it, this game is all about getting those sweet points. On my first run, I racked up around 250,000 points, which isn't too bad considering I haven't played an arena shooter in 2 years. There's a lot of strategies floating around out there but I suggest just finding your own and sticking with it. I personally loved the "Never Stop Shooting" method. I should patent that for every genre, I'd make millions... There's also a number of things that make this quite different from other shooters. For one, you have a slow motion power which you can activate at any time. When activated, you open a rift in time where you can rack up slo-mo points to further add to your multiplier. You also have a single bomb which regenerates after a certain amount of kills/points Not having a cushion of several bombs in your back pocket adds to the tension, forcing you to rely solely on raw skills. Weaving between matrix mode and real time feels really smooth without any hints of clipping. A fun little feature, hopefully more games implement it.
WAVES is immensely addicting and head bobbing. If the fantastic chiptune beats don't hook you in (which it should if you're a warm blooded human), the challenging gameplay will.
Give it a whirl!
Twin-stick shooters are my JAM. Super Stardust HD, Geometry Wars, Transcripted, etc. I love them all.
Generally when purchasing a game, I like to look up user reviews beforehand, but as soon as this game was released, I had to get it. I couldn't wait.
And I'm glad.
The action is fast-paced, the music is driving, the controls are fantastic, and the way the combos/bombs work is very clever. You may find yourself dying rather quickly at first, but before you know it, you'll be plowing through enemies left and right, building up your combo just in time to unleash a bomb right next to an expanding honeycomb, all in order to get the highest score possible.
No multiplayer, and it does seem like each play session is over rather quickly, but this is a game you can play for 30 minutes, every day of the year.
If you enjoy fast-paced twin-stick madness, then pick up this game right away. I would highly recommend using a 360 controller (or MotionInJoy) so you can get the full effect.
Pros
Cons
Awesome frantic high-octane gameplay, addictive catchy music, interesting mechanics, tight controls, lots of different modes, pretty pretty graphics
Number of background songs too few, rounds never last that long
Absolutely worth a 5$ purchase. Was the first game I purchased on my first computer build. Couldn't pass up the deal on the game.
Excellent execution of a stick shooter. Gorgeous graphics.
I see that some people have complained about the amount of Music Tracks the game has available. My Solution: Have your music player of choice running the background, adjust Master Volume of game to accommodate the music you have playing in the background application and JAM ON!!
DESTROY ALL ENEMIES.
Way to win is to keep your multiplier at x999 but beware, you will have no more bombs at x 999, just bullets.
Good Luck.
Video of Me Playing. Enjoy
