6870 - Great mid-range card

review by dropshock

I'd like to say this card is awesome. I put this into a newly made build along with an i5-2500K and 8GB of RAM.

This beast can play any game at 1440x900 at max settings at at least 40FPS, including BF3 ultra. The card was not DOA, and I've been running it for around 2 1/2 months. This is the best mid-range price card around IMO. In fact, I got it for the same price as a 6850! ($150). XFX is a great company, great support and great prices.

Only problems I have is the overclocking ability, the voltage is locked on this card. Luckily, this card already does so well that i don't have the need to OC it much, I just raised the core and the memory by 50 and it has near 6950 performance (Maybe 6930 performance?). If you are a hardcore OCer, I'd recommend getting a higher-end card or a different card which is voltage-unlocked.

Another minor complaint I have is the sound of the card. At default profiles, the card is very quiet. But once it hits the 60% range you can hear the fan more. I have no problem with it as I don't get annoyed, and I use headphones to play my games.

The two cons don't affect my 5-star review at all

Get this card if you want a balance between price and performance!

ProsCons
Runs awesome. Plays any game I throw at it. Runs cool. Quiet at default fan profiile. Cheap. Balance between price and performanceVoltage-locked. Audible at higher fan speeds.

Clean looking

review by badwrench

I got this card on sale at Frys for $159 with a $20 mir (which I received last week

). This was an upgrade from a 6850. I already had an XFX 6850 and was going to Fry's to get another to run xFire, but when I saw this one on the shelf for only $10 more, it was a no-brainer. Sold off the 6850 and here I am only $20 out.

Much better performance than my 6850. I have mine clocked at 950/1075 to keep the temps down so that the loud fan doesn't crank up. Max temp under Furmark is 72C.

ProsCons
Good fps/$$, clean looks, small, low power consumptionLoud fan when ramps up.

Ultra Quiet

review by walrus69

This GFX card is OK if your not doing super high end gaming, assassins creed revelations on max settings works flawless for me and BF3 was decent on ultra , GTA IV was unplayable with Super high quality textures i got a max 20 fps.

During the summer it heats up to ( summer for me doesn't get hotter than 30c) 50c on idle, low 80's during gaming.

I used to own a 2 GB 6950 power color (dual bios) and it was 27c idle.. amazing but this gfx is just bad at cooling for some reason. Also when its on full load it makes a very annoying and loud whining noise!!

ProsCons
Super Quiet, Nice performenceMakes a whining noise at full load, poor cooling
