Try a different PCIe lane or your board may have run out of PCIe lanes. Not sure which to tell you though, honestly.

The problem is its the only x16 slot on the motherboard. Also has one x1 slot.

Check if your BIOS Setup has an "PEG force 1X" option.
Normally under Advanced Chipset Features.
It has to be on disabled.

I had quite an ordeal getting my two Dell Perc 5/i cards to work; but I think it was probably worth it. Hopefully these tips will help someone out:

  • If you've installed an Intel NIC card in the same system, disabling the boot agent (aka flash ROM) may be necessary to prevent it from interfering with the Perc's boot agent; at least it was necessary with my new Intel Gigabit CT cards otherwise the Perc wouldn't initialize on boot up leading to issues with disk detection. To do this, boot to DOS and use Intel's IBAUTIL to disable the flash ROM boot agent. The boot agent also interfered with my ability to enter the BIOS on another motherboard so disabling it might be worthwhile anyway.
  • If all else fails, reset your motherboard's BIOS to factory defaults. I did this when I had trouble with my Asus M3A79-T mobo only detecting one of my two Percs. Afterward my two cards automagically appeared even after I made all my BIOS changes again. Of course, I might have made changes that I forgot about...
  • Stick with version 7.0.1-0051 of the LSI firmware. Later versions may have the warm boot issue where the Perc card sometimes fails to initialize on a reboot; necessitating a full shutdown. (DuckieHo: I recommend adding this to the front page since this seems to be a relatively common issue with some Perc 5/i cards).
  • In case you don't want to use the LSI drivers, recent Dell drivers for the Percs can be found under Dell's support page for the PowerEdge 1900 server. Server 2003 drivers should work for XP, Server 2003 will work with XP x64, and the Server 2008 drivers for Vista and Windows 7 (both 32-bit and 64-bit). LSI firmware and the LSI MegaRaid manager will work fine with these Dell drivers.
  • Older Dell drivers for the Perc 5/i may not work with the later LSI firmware versions. I initially though I bricked my Perc 5/i after updating the firmware since I couldn't get it to install in Windows (and therefore couldn't use the Windows flash utilities to flash back). However, I updated the drivers to the latest ones for the PowerEdge 1900 and it worked fine. The ones I was using before were older drivers for the Dell Precision 490.

Of course, what works for me might not work for me so the standard disclaimer applies (you assume any and all risk from following my advice, etc).

I will try the suggestion about the Boot Agent. My Pro/1000 PT NIC isn't working probably due to this. Just for clearification, I should use IBAUTIL to disable the Boot Agent on the NIC?

As for the warm boot issue, do you have a link to the 7.0.1-0051 firmware? The latest offical version is 7.0.1-0061. That has warm boot issues on the Asus Rampage Extreme, 780i, and 780i FTW.
