all this about the cables is exactly why i bought mine from the guy who was including cables, and a bbu. i can't wait to get it and try it out, but i'm wondering if i should have gone with a perc 6/i for $10 more... oh well.

Just wondering though, which is it cheaper than the version without the sideband connector?
And the difference is about $30 which is a lot!!!

Also, do yours have clips to secure connection with hdds?
for the part number that i mentioned earlier: the SAS end connector has clips on it, the SATA clips do not.

if you can get it cheaper without the sideband connector, you might as well. I dont imagine the sideband is useful unless your enclosure specifically has one and needs it to send signals back to the raid controller.

Nothing you're actually going to buy and stick in your computer will use the sideband connector, so just pass it by. The backplanes that do are expensive and usually made for specific rackmount servers.

sorry i didn't write that post properly

from adaptec's web site
http://www.adaptec.com/en-US/product...es/cables/sas/

Why is the
SASx4 (SFF-8484) to SATA (4)x1 with sideband (SFF-8448) (almost bottom of the page)
cheaper than the
SAS x4 (SFF-8484) to SATA (4) x1 WITHOUT SIDEBAND (top of page)

but anyway.
I got bored with all this cable searching!
I am going to buy the adaptec ones RIGHT NOW!

Ebay is your friend. Under $15 shipped.

I've bought 4 sets of these cables and they all worked great.

Hello everyone!

I've completed the mammoth task of reading through this thread..118 pages!! My god!

I've just ordered myself a lovely Perc5/i and hope to have it in the next week or so.

However I am a little concerned about the cooling of such a monster, I've seen people use the Zalman heatsinks and even the bloke who liquidcooled his (very impressive).

I'm basically trying to find out does anyone know of a fairly decent way to cool this thing. I don't have a liquidcooling system so that's definitely out of the question. I could use a Zalman heatsink though I'm unsure how people are then cooling that. Since it's a pain in the arse spot to cool, how have you people managed it!?

Thankyou in advance

With just the Zalman NBF-47 the heatsink got very hot, but as soon as I put a SpotCool in front of it, now it stays nice and cool.
