The hard drive might have encountered a bad sector. If it took too long at attempting to fix the error then it could be dropped from the array. Hence the reason why I generally prefer WD hard drives with TLER enabled for my RAID5 arrays.

Does anybody have comparisons between 256MB cache vs. 512MB cache? What do people who did this upgrade recommend?

Also, how do people access the SMART data on the drives which are on the card?

Yes, agreed. The TLER/ERC/CCTL should be set to less than 10 seconds because LSI's default drop out rate is 10 seconds.

Cheers

These are all ES.2 drives, designed for arrays... is there something I should be doing?

i'm trying to crossflash my perc from the lsi firmware 7.0.1-0056 to the latest dell firmware. I made a dos boot disk with the megacli.exe and firmware on it, but when i run the command "megacli -adpfwflash -f dell.rom -a0" it tells me "error: the image file has older version that or same as that on the controller. the controller was not flashed." How do i force it to flash to the dell firmware?

Does it work if you add -nocheck in the mix?

So, megacli -adpfwflash -nocheck -f dell.rom -a0

Not exactly sure of megacli's syntax, but that's what's used for megafw.

Default PERC 6/i Custom Heatsink

Custom PERC 6/i heatsink for your viewing pleasure. I've at least doubled the surface area of the RAID on Chip processor.

Preping for the new HS. I've placed a thermal pad on the chip above the LSI processor.

Mounted.

Close up.

Interestingly, the IHS is just a metal shield on a die. You can see the gap (sorta) here. Anyone want to attempt to pop off the IHS?

Nice job! thats a nice HS you got there. I wasnt aware the LSI chip had an IHS, from what it looked like it didnt. I didnt take it off though.

Duckie, looks like you got some light pink nail polish on there already? did you not test, or does it have the same issue as the 5/i ?

also, i know the one connector there is the BBU.. but what about the other one in the 6/i? or the one above the HS on the 5/i (2 pin i think?) ?

im assuming one is an "alarm" connector (what you use for the alarm? perhaps an extra case speaker?? assuming of course its the 2-pin..)

as well.. anyone know what software can detect SMART in-OS for the perc? (if any can??)
