Ok, so I tried to update the firmware to the latest Dell firmware, says it is not compatible with my system. I was going to do the LSI flash, but the link just points to the driver page and not the flash utility. So right now I have a card that will not start, so any suggestions would be helpful.
Thanks,

Are you sure ? Because this is "5x1 native SATA II Port Multiplier" and there is no info about "they will work ONLY with SIL-xxxx chipset" ...

Here is more info about Port Multipliers and how they work:
http://www.sata-io.org/portmultiplier.asp

And the question is: does PERC 5/i support "Command-based switching" or "FIS–based switching" or none of them ?

thanks

The problem is that the card in question here (the PERC) is a SAS card. It supports sata (backwards-compatibility), but i have doubts it supports the port multipliers because it is not a true SATA device. Unfortunately I don't have any way to test this to give you a definitive answer.

The port replicator lets 5 drive use one Sata lane to transfer data. I have one for sale with a case but they way it works if you plug the replicator into a sata controller that isnt the Silicon Image 3132 or one or two other the only drive it will see is the first volume on the replicator. I have 3 drives on the port replicator the first 2 500GB was in raid 0 and the other was just a single drive. When plugged into the correct card 2 drives were seen the 931GB raid 0 drive and the single 500GB drive. If I plugged it into another Sata controller it only saw the 931GB drive and that was the only drive seen. Why would you want to use a port replicator on a PERC5/i anyway, it has a limited bandwith for all the drives.

Thanks for confirming that with actual evidence for me

I just got my PERC 6/i installed in a 780i reference mobo.

The card POSTs and I can get into the config screen. However, the card won't recognize any attached hard drives. I swap it with a PERC 5/i and it see the disks so that means the HDs and cables are good.

What to do next?

Does anyone have any issues with the 5/i initializing from a reboot. It seems that upon a reboot, the PERC card is not recognized, but if I shutdown then power up the card is noticed right away. It really is that simple, reboot then no boot, shutdown... good to go

Change your Firmware. I updated the OP with the different versions.

I wish I had a 780i to test on also. That has to be quite frustrating.
