The effect of the cache does work to mitigate this, but I would still recommend a single smaller OS disk (short-stroked HDD or SSD) and then a RAID5/6 storage array. If you need extra space for your apps or games and cannot afford a larger SSD then an extra 2-disk RAID0 array will be faster than a single disk for some games and roughly equal for others.

This does add up to a lot of disks though. I believe the optimal setup for most users buying disks now would be either a large enough SSD (prob 60/120GB) or single 1TB Caviar Black for OS (but not data - keep that off the main disk). Then have a separate RAID5/6 either locally or on a networked server to store your data.
The problem is that I only have 1 desktop and a laptop, and no option for a server.

I was thinking I would get raid 5 for OS which would give me increased speed and if 1 went down it would be ok. I would most likely short stroke too. And also maybe get another 1gb WD green and put that for a raid 5 also, to add to the 2 I already have.

This is just one option tho. So I am welcome to your suggestions.

RAID 5 for an OS is fine. Just note that 3 drives in RAID 5 will not be as fast as two drives in RAID 0.

Also, make sure that your OS and data partitions are separate. It will save you a lot of headaches when you reformat.

Does anyone know if a PERC 6/i can handle four 2TB drives in a RAID?

The ICH10R on your motherboard will support 2 separate RAID0 arrays. If this is all you want to do then you probably won't see much benefit from buying a PERC (or any other RAID card).

If you shifted to new, fast SSDs, 4 of those, even running in separate arrays, might be enough to bottleneck the ICH10R. However this would likely bottleneck the PERC5 also.

Guys if you could help me out. I am so stuck now. I am running XP, and Installed my PERC6i, but my drivers install with a exclamation mark, cannot start. I am using Foxconn ELA, and nailpolish mod. I tried plugging the controller into different slots and still nothing.
Thank you

Yeah it can.

Most all drives will work fine with the PERC6/i card. You might get a bottleneck with Intel's X-25 SSDs. But that's a maybe.
