I'd quote the one post that outlined how to add more drives than that. But I can't find it.

Either way, the max amount of drives that a SAS controller can handle is 128.

Duly noted...it is tempting, but the RE 2TB drives are going for about $300 each, and I don't know if I can justify $2400 on HDD's right now...let alone trying to explain that purchase to the wife, LOL!

That's amazing! But I doubt I'll ever own 128 HDD's all at one time.

IIRC, most current OS's couldn't regulate that much available space.

http://cgi.ebay.com/Poweredge-2600-2...3%3A1|294%3A50

also any guess on how long it would take to OCE 2 750gb to a 4 drive array
Why not buy one directly from Dell.

This is not true - the max amount of drives a SAS controller can handle is dependant on the controller & the expanders used.

For example an LSI SAS 8704EM2 can handle up to 32 drives, the PERC 5/i can (possibly) handle just 10. But the LSI SAS 8888ELP can handle 240 drives total.

6. How big can a GPT disk be?
In theory, a GPT disk can be up to 2^64 logical blocks in length. Logical blocks are commonly 512 bytes in size.

The maximum partition (and disk) size is a function of the operating system version. Windows XP and the original release of Windows Server 2003 have a limit of 2TB per physical disk, including all partitions. For Windows Server 2003 SP1 Windows XP x64 edition, and later versions, the maximum raw partition of 18 exabytes can be supported. (Windows file systems currently are limited to 256 terabytes each.)

Would this work fine without the BBU, because most of the ones which are selling on Ebay don't come with the BBu :/

Yes, but it's risky. If you have a UPS you'll be fine.

Yeah, it'll run fine, but have a UPS or something else to keep your computer on long enough to manually shut down or you could end up with some serious data corruption.
