correct but a UPS wont help in the event of BSOD or system freeze

You usually don't BSOD except under benchmarking and such, so the occurrence of data corruption is very low.

You can get them easily enough.

Bearing in mind this is your data we are talking. I would cease debating and just buy one.

x2

Why spend $100-150 on a RAID card, $40 on cables & $300-1000+ on drives only to scrimp on a $30 battery that adds an extra layer of protection to your data?

You might as well just run jbod & take your chances with disk failures.

I was just saying as most of the PERC's on Ebay don't come with BBU's and I was wondering why...

The reason is PERC's on eBay are used cards pulled from servers. The BBUs from these are probably worn out and no good for resale...

That's actually surprsing considering that the BBU on my PERC 4 that i got in my PowerEdge 2800 is still good. And those are some old/er servers.

in case anyone is looking for some, these would make good 512MB upgrades for the PERC 5/I or 5/E:

http://cgi.ebay.com/512MB-1Rx8-PC2-3...3%3A1|294%3A50

Only $9 shipped. They are the correct spec for PERC 5.

Edit: I have nothing to do with that ebay seller. I just noticed it is the exact spec for the PERC 5 and thought those interested could benefit.

I don't think that "regular" memory module is right for PERC 5/e - what with BBU ?
PERC 5/e require TBBU - special memory module with battery

technically, you're right. but i don't think using a non-TBBU memory module is an impossibility. i could test it out once i get around to repair some of my PERC 5/E cards (i still need to de-solder some capacitors to measure their specs so i can order the parts, so it's not anytime soon).
