It's gotta be for LEDs, I just have no idea how to use it. Kinda thinking about cutting it off. I'll do some research on it later though, maybe it's something weird.

It's for the HD Activity LED, I'll get you guys a pin out shortly. I have my PERC 5/i inside an actual PowerEdge 840.

Is there a Dirty Cache LED on the PERC 5/i? The manual mentioned it but I don't see it.

The extra plug in between the SAS connectors are for HDD Activity. The pinout is +--+. From what I can tell the LED on pins 1&2 flash exectly the same as pins 3&4.

Also, anyone looking to water cool there PERC 5, I can help. Msg me on AIM, or PM me.

Lastly, has anyone had an issue after installing there PERC 5 card playing games? I have a Gigabyte GA-965p-DQ6, with a GeForce 8800GTS in my PEG-0 slot, and my PERC 5 controller in my PEG-1 slot. Everytime I play a game my system will just power off. sometimes it happens witin a minute, sometimes I can play for about 10 minutes. I do not believe it's due to a bad power supply or something like that. I really believe it's some kind of bus, or interrupt conflict, because my board will power down, then up, then down, then up. (That normally happens if I over clock my system too high.)

P.S. It does this weather my CPU/Ram is overclocked or not, and when I overclock my CPU/RAM I set the PCI-E bus to 100Mhz to avoid overclocking that bus.

  1. Is it safe to use the raid card without extra cooling with an ambient of ~33*C? I will have a fan over it but I dont wanna burn the card prematurely
  2. I got my card and cables today, same withe extra RAM... Can I upgrade the RAM after setting everything up? or should I do it before
  3. Same as before: flash to latest BIOS before or after setting it all up?
I wanna test the card before modifying the cooling on it incase its dead or whatever but dont know if it is safe..

Will be doing tests soon!

Airflow over the stock HS is just needed. The IOP is rated up to 105C.

You can upgrade the RAM later.

BIOS can be flashed at any time.

ok sweet sounds good then

Ill probably set up the controller tonight and break down the computer tonight for various things that need to be done (wire management, etc)

When I start getting time heres what I will probably do
  1. Start running tests on the 4-way RAID for my NVIDIA board as it is right now... its always been consistent I just never saved the results
  2. Back up all my info to my 500g drive (this will probably be the last thing I do Monday night)..
  3. Flash the card to latest BIOS before reformatting
  4. break down computer and reconstruct my wiring (this will probably take all day Tuesday) and wire up the new SATA controller.. test things out make sure nothing is screwy.. Then stick in the 512MB cache and install windows on the new RAID system
  5. Run some HDD bench tests and get on with applying my settings again
  6. Then work on fixing up the LCS like I wanted to, at this point I will be installing the aftermarket cooling on the RAID card so I don't have to worry about it.. this will probably be over the weekend
nobody really needs to know this.. i just decided to dump my thoughts here so i don't forget something then later on

Yes, there is a green light on the board that is a dirty cache led. Every time I forcefully powered down my machine it will stay lit up until you power up.

Oh, if and when this happens you'll know because the controller will take a minute longer to init. I have 5 drives in a supermicro tray, and I have 512mb on my controller, I can hear it dump the cache, then it'll continue to boot.

If it comes with the battery unit then its not a bad deal, you just have to find a slot cover for it.
