I think I do a consistency check once a week, but at a 30% rate. I don't know if that's too much, but at 30% I don't really notice it.
__________________I would add all the drives at once, then you won't have to wait each step. (-: I use the LSi BIOS/Driver and have the storage manager installed, and after I setup my raid I pulled a drive (just so I know what would happen), a message box appeared instantly telling me that ARRAY 0 was degraded. I believe it even said what drive number failed. Anyways, a couple minutes later I slid the drive back in, opened up the storage manager, and rebuilt just fine. I never even had to reboot. It did lag a bit for a few hours due to a 75% rebuild rate. I hope that info helps.

Well I finished benching my machine with 3 SAS drives and just realized that my motherboard is only running at at 1X, I guess I have to upgrade to a X48 chipset.

I guess i am looking for a second opinion on upgrading my raid array.
Thanks to xboxor for the first opinion. I currently have 4 drives and will be adding 4 more. should i just do the bump straight to 8 or should i do 1 at a time? When adding a drive am a at a higher risk of failure? or while adding that disk am i still able to loss a drive without the entire raid failing?

I do believe that while expanding an array you are exposed to the possibility of data loss if a drive fails. I'm not 100% on that though, and without knowing for sure, I feel safer telling you that you're exposed to risk, rather then saying that you'd be fine.
__________________Again, I would add all 4 at once. I think it would take less time then expanding 4 to 5, 5 to 6, 6 to 7, and finally 7 to 8 drives. That's a lot of expanding. If it were me I would do it before I goto bed, and I would do that in the Perc BIOS, rather then through the software, unless you have you OS on another drive. I like doing expansions when the array is offline. It's so much faster! Hope this helps.
