And I'll read through those a bit later, I'm in a rush atm. Either way I'll probably try doing it on different motherboards as well.

Greetings! Just bought a Perc 5i integrated from ebay, cables from dealextreme.
M2n-sli deluxe mobo (socket AM2) - works fine in black 8x PCI-E slot, no memory probs so far, BBU works fine as it seems, 170$ w/o delivery (220 with it, but I live in Russia, and it shows) At first I was also having trouble flashing it, but I think I understand why: I use WinXP. Dell DOES NOT have drivers for XP (ones I downloaded refused to work with a very clear statement - this driver does not support WinXP), so I tried to flash it w/o drivers... and got: Failed to get ControllerId List. Failed to get CpController object. Getting rid of that is very simple: I just used HP tools to make a bootable USB flash, used DOS Cli to flash F/W and voila - I have the latest LSI firmware! (You don't have to install drivers in dos mode, as you understand). Of course, if you have Windows server edition, it's not a problem. Then I used trick from 2cpu to install LSI drivers: Look up your vendor and device ID (e.g. via device manager). Open oemsetup.inf with a text-editor and replace the IDs of the 8408E controller with the ones of your PERC (e.g. all “VEN_1000&DEV_0411&SUBSYS_10011000” entries become “VEN_1028&DEV_0015&SUBSYS_1F021028”). In my case I only changed 1F021028 to 1F031028. Drivers installed just fine, now I can use megaraid storage managed on XP with impunity. I hope it will help people who ran into same probs! |

Oh, and to deal with overheating, we've installed a 2x larger heatsink from an old motherboard (I'm lucky here, cause I work as a tech support on a rather large plant, and we have boxes and boxes of this stuff), and screwed a 40mm fan on top of it.
It does whine a bit when it starts up, but then gets silent pretty quickly. The attachement was simply a matter of removing the bracket from the old, smallish heatsink, and swapping it with one that came with larger heatsink (that was similar, but incompatible). Now it's just warm to the touch. I do have a noobish question, though: What's the default login, password for admin access in megaraid manager? I can only 'view' the configuration for now (don't have HDDs yet, due to stupid credit card glitch that left my funds frozen till the end of month). Last edited by Balor : 07-30-08 at 05:22 PM |

Awesome thanks for the info, I'll update. Do Server 2003 drivers work with XP? How did you mount that HS?
I'm in the process of Dremeling my HS so I can epoxy on a heatpipe.... I hate loops.

Well, it wasn't me who mounted it, but 'golden hands' hardware guy in our department. I, truth be told, suck when it comes to dealing with hardware - I was just helping him.
But it turned out quite allright - like I said, we simply removed the wire bracket form the old HS and attached a new HS with that old wire. New HS used very similar, if not completely compatible wire bracket too... if you can name HS from an age-old mobo new, that is :P. I'd post pictures, but our digital camera is inaccessable right now, and my mobile phone camera SUCKS. And Win 2003 DELL drivers DO NOT work on XP. They even say as much, like I wrote above. What about the manager password, btw? My card came completely bare, so I'm a bit short of manuals. Last edited by Balor : 07-30-08 at 05:33 PM |

Hah, I see now - Megaraid manager uses server admin pass/login, not some sort of stored in controller's internal memory.
Anyway, an other noobish question: I have only one 'spare' driver right now (suddely found myself short on cash due to credit card glitch). And it's my 'mobile HDD' with lots of data I CAN afford , but not really WANT to lose. Will plugging it in and creating a 'raid 0' configuration of one drive will erase all data on it? It does not HAVE to, but I suspect it will. I really wanna test in 'in action', though. |

I'm waiting on a spare hard drive so I can put my data somewhere while I migrate. And I think DuckieHo is waiting on some raptors.
