I have a question maybe someone could answer. I currently have 2x1TB WD Black Drives. I love these drives. I have been a fan of WD for a long time now, but since these are so expensive, I'm thinking of buying 3 Samsung F1 1TB drives to finish off my 5x1TB array. I know ideally you'd want to have matching drives, but would this be a problem with 2 WD and 3 Samsungs? Or should I stay away from the Samsungs for now?

There's nothing wrong with mixing brands, the specs are the same then it wiill be 100% fine.

And Samsung drives are great products btw, Especially the F1 series

Thanks. It just really struck me because the Samsung F1's are 109 with free shipping while WD Black's are 149 still... I have the funds this paycheck to do it now and it's hard for me to make Technology decisions while trying to budget money. Especially with a brand new truck payment =x

All input is greatly appreciated

It will work. The only reason not to mix drives is that array performance will be limited to the worst performing drive(s).

Let's say you had a 2 HDs. One can do 100MB/s and the other does 80MB/s. In a perfect RAID0, they would only do 160MB/s.

Wait for Black Friday... I expect to see sub-$100 1TB drives.

That's what I was thinking. I may just do that. But would you advise against F1's mixed with Blacks vs. all Blacks? The way I see it, in 3 years (when Samsung's warranty is gone) 1TB drives will be much much cheaper than now. So if I need to replace a drive after that point in time, the $120 extra I spent for the WD's would be pointless.

Your 5xRAID5 performance should be over 350MB/s regardless.... I think you'll be fine.
