Default Least painful way to RAID

So I got my 2 x 500 gig Caviar Blacks. I have a P5Q motherboard I'm going to be putting them onto. The manual states I can build a RAID with it.

Good.

What I would like to know is should I set the RAID up first, then set up XP SP3 on the IDE drive I plan to use for the OS drive, or set up XP first then set the RAID up?

The reason I ask is that the driver install phase can be tricky with some OSes and the order in which the drivers are installed can matter.

Any pointers?

First,
Which type of RAID are you setting up? RAID0, RAID1 ?

Second,
How many other drives you have in your rig?
Where are you going to install your OS, Applications & data?
Do you have a floppy drive? (3.5")

If you plan to install your OS in a drive that is not member of the RAID array, then you can go either way, since you will not need any drivers to install the OS.

bump - I'll be doing this with my 750 we'd want Raid 0 for mirror and Raid 1 for SSD or 4+ HDD right ?

raid 1 is mirrored, raid 0 is using 2 + hd's as one hd (means the read/write heads are effectively double)

To clarify:

I have a separate HD for my OS stuff. These Caviars are going to be for fast(?) RAID 1, mirroring.

As I understand the way the Asus P5Q BIOS is set up, I can enable the RAID features by setting the SATA to be RAID. So the question is should I set the HDs up prior to the OS install or after?

RAID 0 is the fast one, with striped data.

RAID 1 is the more reliable one, with mirrored data.

Definitely set up the RAID array first, and then install the OS on the drive that is not in the RAID array (just to ensure that nothing screws up, thus loosing to OS that you just installed).

If your OS is going on another drive, you can build the array at any time, before or after you install the OS.

RAID 1 is not fast, it is more or less the same speed as a single drive. It is the safest RAID because you can lose one drive and still have your data on the other disk. RAID 0 requires backups as if one drive is lost you will lose all of your data.

The RAID drivers need to be installed before your OS will recognize the RAID array anyway, so there is no need to do the array first if you dont want to. Either way will work
