Default Thinking about RAID

Well another 500GB of my drive is pretty cheap these days, I never setup a RAID before in my life. Just wondering is the controller on my motherboard good enough to decently RAID0 2x 500GB (Guessing RAID0 Is the best performance).

Your on-board southbridge will handle RAID0 just fine with only 2 drives.

Just make sure that you backup your data regularly. Hard drive loss in the array wipes out everything.

Your board will easily support that set up.

I prefer Raid 1 for the simple reason that any disk failure at Raid 0 destroys all your data, whereas all disk must fail at Raid 1. The read speed is comparable between both setups and I value my data more than a little write speed...

Your setup is entirely up to you.

that really depends on the person, some people don't really have anything important on there computers, and if you do there are alternative backup methods, for example i use a external hdd to backup all PCs in the house

Raid-0 and a external drive would be a perfect system

RAID-0 may give you slightly better performance in benchmarks, but what do you use your computer for, and what do you expect to gain?

ah thanks, Guessing that Vista & 7 should detect the drive or can I load the drivers into a USB flash drive?

Honestly I want to do it because it's a "First time" type of things. Right now I game and save video's for youtube but that's pretty much it. However I'm open to try new stuff that mite take advantage of RAID0

Yeah both Vista and 7 are cool with just the integrated raid-drivers. If you want to, you can still use the USB-stick method to add the additional drivers

Yup, that's good enough reason!

Your manual will tell you everything you need to do to enable it/build the array. As stated, no drivers needed to install 7..
