Default Raid Noob Calling All Pros!

Hey
Ok i have £40 to upgrade my rig
My first thought was ram but for 4GB @ 1066 im looking at about £70 - 90

Ram prices have gone up to much

So i was considering raid 0 with another Maxtor Diamond Max 23 500GB

This
But i have no idea how to set up raid
Is it during the windows installation?

And how much performance increase will i get and will it be noticable?

Thnx BTW

All you need to do to set-up RAID is to go into BIOS and set it to RAID. When you POST, you will see an option to enter the RAID set-up. Once in there, you create the desired array. When you boot, it will show the array as one drive. Install windows on that and your done.

A few warnings, though: Make sure you run back-ups if running RAID0 (which is the array I assume you are talking about) You will need to reinstall windows unless you have some sort of imaging software and want to image the drive and then just put it back on the array. (acronis, norton ghost etc.) just remember that when one drive fails in RAID0, the array fails. Also, the only way to access the array is with the same controller. (so, if the mobo dies, you can't just hook the hdd's up to another PC to get files unless that PC has the same RAID controller)

edit: I have only ever used Intel ICHxR controllers, so I am not sure if the AMD one is different.

I'm not sure, but you should be able to do some googling and get some HD tune results for a single drive vs. 2 in RAID0

O kguys im kind of stuck.....

Do you have to raid the exact same drive?

Or can your raid it with any drive?

I was thinking of raiding it with this

http://www.cclonline.com/product-inf...id=st3500630as

How well would that work?

Thnx

Generally I think you should do the same drive but if not then your gonna have the slowest smallest drive be the lead basically. Kind of like mixing ram modules.
