Default Help with server

Okay heres the situation. So i always wanted to have a server (a decent one at least).. heres the system i plan on using

- Intel Pentium 4 Prescott 3.7GHz LGA775 Extreme Edition
- Asus P5AD2-E Deluxe LGA775
- 2GB OCZ DDR2 800 SLi Ready OR 2GB Corsair XMS DDR2 800
- Harddrives... not sure.. if i can get a 400gb sata to work properly (is there any diag tools to check if theres any problems??) and some other 80gb IDE hd's

Pretty much run remotely like this server computer i have now. Can go wireless or wired (depends where i put it i guess). so no peripherals (maybe 500gb ext hd) but no mouse/keyboard/monitor/speaker..

Things i would like to have:

FTP
Bridge/Server for Ham radio (dos and windows based)
able to run azereus (BT)
maybe host a site...

also, i got some space from a fellow OCN member (haveagooda). will see if i can integrate that with my own server.

what else can i do with a server?

also.. uhh. if anyone is familiar with intel, plz pm me. lol. i have a heatsink on there that is somewhat designed like the tuniq tower (fan in middle of two heatsink panel things).. it goes on and off.. is there a way to control the fan to run at a constant speed? when it goes on.. freaking loud.. off.. low speed.. the fan on there uses a 4 pin pwm connector (is taht what its called?)

also.. i need to find a case rofl. i have this runnin on my desk right now all laid out of anti-static bags haha

Now, I've never set up a windows server, besides file sharing, but I'll see if I can get you started:

I would probably recommend windows server (though I have never used it).

Although, If I was in your position, my ghetto set it up would use Windows XP Pro, and remote desktop (to set up/maintain the server without a mouse/keyboard/monitor - just need the IP). In this case it would just be a windows computer that runs 24/7.

for FTP: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_FTP_servers may be a good place to start.

Also, uTorrent (my personal fav) has a web interface that may be helpful.

For the web server, Apache is widely used and is free. I've used the linux version and it works great.

And I assume you would know how to setup/run the Ham radio stuff.

I hope this helps!

also, if anybody knows of a good reason not to use xp as a server, I'd like to know too. (stability is my assumption)

haha... I've got a computer running on a wooden bookshelf without a case back at the dorm. Who needs cases anyways? :P

Windows... not the best server OS IMO. Apart from sometimes erratic operations, things like forced reboot after updates are NOT welcome. Also, it costs something, which sucks.

Linux would be the way to go. I've got Apache, VSFTPD, Azureus with WebUI, and CIFS shares over SMB on my server box, and it runs smoothly. People say setting up a linux server is tough, sometimes it is, but if you really get into it and print out some guides, there's nothing very difficult to it.

If you must go Windows, Apache + Filezilla server is a guaranteed win, and I guess you could also use the integrated CIFS sharing even though it doesn't offer password protection.

For the connection issues, I suggest that you cable it, specially since you'll be running streaming audio off of it. I'm assuming you'll be using Shoutcast. The thing totally rapes a wireless connection, not really recommended.

What?!?! Flat out, totally biased opinion.

I have a full windows server 2003 (enterprise edition) domain on my home network. Using, FTP(filezilla), DFS, DNS, Website with joomla, (yes thats right... joomla on IIS baby), file sharing, printer sharing, folder redirection w/ synchronization (which is an absolute dream cuz I dont have to worry about my data when I want to reinstall or if a HDD fails.), ventrilo server, and a whole slew of other minor services that take a huge load off of my desktops.

Windows is totally a kick ass server.

IIS is great, i found it to be better then apache and lighttpd, ive had it running with php with no problems whatsoever, the integration with windows gets to be a pain in the ass though when you have desktop interactive applications

I was refering to Windows XP, not everybody has the moola for 2003. It isn't the best because obviously it wasn't made for serving.

I've heard great good about Server 2003 too, I just never managed to get my paws on a copy.
