well youve got the processing power, what is your REAL upload though? 1.5mbps is 187kb up, you will be able to host, maybe 2 20-30 player game servers

Quote:
No, #1. Your BF2142 server will be unranked making hosting one useless. #2. You will not be able to play without the whole server lagging.
server = separate machine, your talking about a HOST

ill give you run down on how much youll be able to host, if it truly is 1.5mbps = 187kb upload

teamspeak youll do easily 16 slots
unreal 99 youll do easily
battlefield 2142, youll do easily 20-40 slots
these are all simultaneous, the rest will put strain , you can exclude teamspeak it isnt demanding on the default codec, you should be able to do 3 of those game servers with the slots you specified, if your upload is truly 1.5mbps

She did not state it would be LAN. It is assumed to be internet because of "on current monthly fees to the game server companies" CS 1.6 and BF2142 are entirely seperate game engines, therefore the connection on one isn't the same requirement as another. Server hardware is fine, connection isn't.
hes connecting over the lan, while players connect from the internet, so no he wont lag

Host is not the same thing as a server. In the way your putting it a host would be the ISP or Datacenter. A dedicated server is what you mean or server for short.

She will lag, next time you set up a server over a connection like that, connect and see what happens, the server will lag, the connection needs to handle both the server and client at the same time. I have done this using CS:S and it WILL lag especially with BF2142.

You do realize the engine on BF2142 is gigantic, you CANNOT do 40 slots on BF2142.
And it is a she.

i never said host is same thing as a server, i said YOUR talking about a host, = saying its not server, what are you talking about anyway, im not "putting it in anyway", she wont lag, the only reason you lagged is cause you were using an external address, if she is on a lan the internal address has to be used, which will not lag absolutely, the word lag and "her" shouldnt even be in the same sentence, she will be playing over lan, the only possibility for lag is to the external internet players, yes she will be able to do 20-40 slots on bf2142 just like i said before, the minimum for a 64 slot is 2.5mbps, which is 312kb up, these requirements are meant to handle the most active scenarios and leave extra room, no bf2142 is not "gigantic", ive had multiple dedicated servers now and in the past, i know the numbers well, "gigantic" = 900+ player WoW server, with everyone in the same spot, using max upload per player which is 9-10kb per player, btw i told you why you lagged, a server host on the same network will have a whopping ping of 0-5, if she was to lag the whole idea of "lan" gaming wouldnt exist

Ill tell you that on a 1mbit upload connection hosting 16 people in a CS:S server at a low rate of 10000 each is pushing it.
Youll be able to host one server only, unless each is 2-3 people servers.
Hate to break it to you. Oh, and pings from a home connection will suck.

you cant host any of these at the same time with more then like 3-4 people in them. Games suck up bandwidth.

Thanks again to all for the constructive comments.

I don't anticipate very much traffic to my home game server, probably fewer than 10 (combined) concurrent connections at any one time. Earlier this evening we had 8 UT2K4 players on, with pings ranging from 40 to 95. Not the greatest, but certainly still playable. I'm sure that certain other games will eat greater bandwidth, but we really don't average that much traffic, even thru our current rented servers.

I pay for all our clan servers out of my own pocket and I guess you could say that I'm cheap in trying to save $97 a month and convert our UT, UT2K4, UT3, BF2142 and COD4 servers, but I hate to spend that wad of cash every month knowing that 99% of the time our servers are totally empty.
