Default Game Server Bandwidth Requirements

Hi All!

I'm going thru more system upgrades, incuding my home server.

My new server should be able to run multiple games simultaneously, so I'd like to move some of my game servers to it, saving on current monthly fees to the game server companies. I'm just not sure how many players/games my current 1.5 MB upload bandwidth can handle.

Games I'd like to host:

Battlefield 2142 (10 Player)
Call of Duty 4 (10 Player)
Unreal Tournament 3 (10 Player)
Unreal Tournament 2004 (10 Player)
Unreal Tournament 99 (10 Player)
TeamSpeak Server (16 Player)

I doubt that there would be more than a handful of people on any/all the servers at any given time, so theoretically I'd never really come close to maxing it out. Would a 1.5 MB upload speed be enough to support, say ten 2142 players, 3 or 4 UT2K4 players, and a handful of players on TS?

Thanks for any input!

No, #1. Your BF2142 server will be unranked making hosting one useless. #2. You will not be able to play without the whole server lagging.

ok yea it will be unranked thats one thing somthing i wouldent really care about
but why would his server lag if hes connecting to it over the lan?
i did the same thing with my server
only i was running a 32slot cs 1.6 pub and a clan vent on my 512kb up connection
i dont know if you will be able to run that many servers with 1.5mb connection
just set up one server at a time ask the players for feedback on it once in a while after you add a server

Well, 5 on 5 in battlefield 2142 isnt all that entertaining. And, 1.5mbps would not be enough.

She did not state it would be LAN. It is assumed to be internet because of "on current monthly fees to the game server companies" CS 1.6 and BF2142 are entirely seperate game engines, therefore the connection on one isn't the same requirement as another. Server hardware is fine, connection isn't.

Thanks for the feedback guys!

I've run UT 99, UT2K4 and TeamSpeak from home as backup clan servers for a while, although most of the time the servers are running fairly empty. The most I've ever hosted on this connection was 12 UT2K4 players and 10 on Teamspeak, and that was with my old E6420 rig with 2 GB of RAM. My main concern was differences in bandwidth between those games and say BF2142 and COD4. I figure my new hardware should handle everything fine, just not sure how far i could push things before lag started killing us.

For now I'm only going to setup for 16 player UT, UT2K4 and UT3 servers + TeamSpeak, test the bandwidth usage, then add on from there. Thanks again for your feedback!

Assume 5KB/s for each player, and one for each person on teamspeak.

If you have 1.5Mbps upload, that's 192KB/s. Chop off about 20KB/s for overhead/lag/other services/usual internet variances, and you have about 170KB/s to work with.

170KB/s
/
5KB/s
=
34 slots overall.

So you could have 2 10 person servers, and a 10 slot Teamspeak without problem.
