i just got a free server from my neighbor as i helped him order his new HTPC build and i was wondering what would be the best to run on it?
specs 256 ECC pc-133 ram 2x400mhz P2 Cpu's (old i know) i know theres three hardrives im not sure how big each is but they can run in raid also) i was thinking ubuntu server but i want a really light one so i can maximize the space i have and would like it to run fast as i only have 256mb of ram right now (will get 1gb if i can find it for cheap)

Theres no best distro for a server(or anything) IMO. Ubuntu Server is as light as anything else really, it cant be bad it is Debian based after all which is always a plus IMO.
My home multi purpose(dhcp, ftp, file, storage, proxy, torrent) personal server runs Ubuntu Server, for the longest time I had 256mb in it and ran fine.

...I don't see what not, its not as if Ubuntu uses a different kind of terminal or something. Ive never setup a gaming server, but I doubt its much different then on any other distro. it's still linux after all.

it just keeps freezing during install on random files right now its stuck on libss10.9.8 while retrieving it. can this be cause by cd not being burned right?
also whats better 256mb registered or 384 regular ram?

Reboot with Cd in and enter Check CD for Defects.
See if it reports any errors. You usually wanna burn the disk at the lowest speed possible or use quality disks. Or, it may just not like you ![]()

Sounds like a bad burn or image maybe? corruption and gurb error 15 from what googles says is when grub cant find the appropriate files.
Again from googling as I haven't had that error the cache access error could be because what you were trying to update couldn't be stopped by the update manager, so try stopping the service before hand then update.
