I really like using XP Pro... that's what we use in my office, and it works well. easy to pull shortcuts down to all shared files, anything thats public can be accessed with ease. XP is a solid workhorse system, and will last long enough to help you immensely. IMHO, the best operating system for server/networking apps.

sorry for double post...
as far as I know, you should be able to link any OS's together... im assuming the basic outline will just be shared between all computers hooked together? if thats the case then anything that you put in will get to any other OS.... just beware of compatibility issues between new versions of Vista program save stuff and the XP, the two have been known not to be able to always open each other's files... good luck!

I'm no expert but, as far as an OS XP or Linux(if your familiar with)I think would be just fine to just store/retrieve media and data.As far as hardware I think you've to take into account how many PCs/Notebooks will be connecting to the server and how you want them to connect wired or wireless.A wireless router or switch should be enough to get you where you want to be. Others can probably tell you more.
EDIT:I'm Slow ![]()

yeah... if your gonna have more than a few together, wireless will even get you the transfer speeds you will need...... but if its like.... < 3, then going wired would probably be more practical.

well to hook them up wired, you would need to buy a like... 5port switch, something that does the same thing as this
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16833127082 basically what will happen is you will put all your ethernet cables from each computer into a port on the switch, then one from the switch to a modem or wall ethernet outlet, etc that way it will incorporate transfer through the switch of files and will give all comps ethernet access.

Modem>router/switch>connect all pc that you want wired to this including server or connect your wireless notebooks using the network wizard. I would just map a network drive to the server and make sure that it's shared among your network.
