Default Spanned Volumes , what happens when windows deleted ?

Hi
I have a 2.5TB NAS which serves me as a media server , it consists of 2x750gb hard-drives , and 1x1TB.
since I wanted 1 volume instead of 3 , I used disk spanning on Windows XP pro and extended the volume each time I added a hard-drive.

I wonder what will happen if one day I decide to upgrade my windows to Vista Home server, or to do a clean install , will the extended drive stay as 1 big volume , will it be splitted to 3 , or will I have corrupted files where those files span over 2 hard-drives ?

tried to get info from MS site but its like searching a needle in a hay stack. i'm afraid i've done a mistake by extending volumes over and over.

My guess would be that if upgrading windows doesn't normally change your files/filesystem, then you'll be fine. I've never done it, though, and never trust microsoft to make things work properly

If it's just a server, why bother upgrading the OS? IMO the best setup is a linux/apache deal, which is free!

thinking of upgrade cause when i'm entering a folder with 1200 folders i get a 3 sec lag , that's from a remote pc , 1gb lan and a decent netgear router. so I kinda blame the OS for that.

Typically, doing an 'upgrade' from one OS to another can yield some bad results (ie. XP to Vista).. With that said, this would probably be your best bet to retain the span.

BUT..... I would highly suggest that you back up what you need to, wipe and reformat the drives. Then go about the task of creating the Array while installing Vista.
