i would assume that i need some sort of media server.
but here's what i would like to do... complete remote backup of my PC. backup all of my dvd's and music. stream music from remote server to my pc. would it be best if i built a server, or just added more hard drives to my current system? and what would be needed for a server? i have about 4 computers sitting around, but none really worth building imo. i know a lot about ubuntu and pretty profficient with it. however, i don't really know much about networking. i do have a wireless router with my uverse. help?

You could just rebuild one of the computers you have laying around, set up Clonezilla to back up to your other computer (just insert the IP address) and set it to run at some point during the night when you are (theoretically) asleep. For streaming music, you can use this guide to set up Vibe to stream to your clients. Looks like you have to use Windows, but the site says they may start coding for Linux in the future.
