There are no features on the 790GX that you need. Get the cheaper 740G.
I'd feel more comfortable with a dual and it's only a $20 difference from the 2.8GHz single to the dual. I figure when WHS Vail arrives with it's x64 support I'll be ready. I'll definetly go 740G but wouldn't it help to have a spare VR as my WHS install drive?

How big are you thinking? Most of what I've read online these WHS boxes max around 150 watts.. Consider this, 12x WD RE3 1TB drives only pull 100 watts.

I really like and prefer the WD Blacks. IMO they are probably ranked right up there in reliability with the RE drives, but lacking TLER. But from what I understand, you can enable TLER on them anyway.

I would go with the 740G and the CM 590. No sense in spending too much money looking fancy when you are only serving. CPU is good IMO, though I love as much CPU as possible

Edit: Almost forgot. Sell or use the VRaptor in your main build. No need for it. The server will only be booting up once every now and then, and not loading any large apps constantly.
I had originally chose the RE3 for the enterprise rating.. 24/7 environments etc etc.. I would like to get the greens but the lack of performance worries me. Doesn't WHS store files on the 2nd partition of the install drive before it sends them to pool? I just thought having a 10K would benefit me more when it comes to interfacing with the server. I may eventually run more then WHS on this box but I have extra drives and nothing to do with them.. I was planning on getting a 120GB Vertex for my main but Newegg just sold out.

I think you are good then.

It cut the price significantly by going budget board and case, and switching to Blacks.

You won't be disappointed.

It is Windows Home Server. The OS uses a storage pool file system. It uses 20GB for the OS and ALL other HD space is used for data and duplication.

so what happens if a drive fails ?? does it just act like a raid and you put a new disk in and it rebuilds ?

Yup... it will rebuild only the folders that you have selected for duplication. The WHS storage system allows you to select specific folders for duplication. Also to note, WHS uses differential backups to save storage space. After the intial backup of a system, WHS only backups changes going forward. If there minor changes daily, WHS only saves those changes. If it needs to restore a system, it uses the intial back + the changes to calculate what your current system should be.

Sell the Velociraptor 300 and buy 2-3 more 1TB drives.

No, you won't see any performance gain by using a VR drive unless you're doing lots of local file copy stuff or hosting a datacenter.

If you're not planning on running a datacenter (i.e. hosting database applications with intensive ETL processes with millions of rows, massive file upload/download requests, or commercial web hosting) you will never ever ever see a performance difference between a VR or a green drive.

Again, your network will be the bottleneck even if you use gigabit connections. SATA speeds are faster than gigabit ethernet so when you're transferring files to and from your server you will be limited to network speeds.

Default Order Complete

Well as an update I purchased everything tonight and plan on it coming by this Friday. The only change I made was I swapped out the WD blacks for some Samsung F1 drives at 89.99 each. While the WD has the random access times the Samsung beats it on everything else.. At $30 less per drive, cooler operating temps, and a measly.02 ms longer avg seek time it wasn't a question.

Oh and besides two drives I went with four . I'll be sure to update this thread during and after the build. Thanks for the help everyone!
