Well it's not exactly RAID.. WHS doesn't support software RAID only hardware.. Even so it's called an "unsupported scenario" install. WHS utilizes Drive Extender which has functionality similar to RAID1, two copies of data in shares designated for duplication are stored on two separate hard drives. However, it's more flexible in that RAID 1 uses two disks, and duplicates everything on them. WHS lets you choose not to duplicate something if it's data that you're willing to consider losing, or that you feel you can recreate with an acceptable amount of work. People say Drive Extender lacks the performance of a true RAID solution but I personally prefer it's simplicity and proprietary restore options. Here is a link to the M$ white paper on Drive Extender: Drive Extender *.docx

As an update to my build Newegg botched the shipping and everything will get here on 04/27/09 .. They gave me my shipping charges back so that's something. I did get a package from another vendor though, digital cam pics coming as the build begins early next week.

Looking very good man- you've inspired me to finally get off my backside and set-up my own WHS. Keep the updates coming!

Thanks for the words of encouragement, build incoming! Everything came in on Monday even though UPS tried to mess me up by rescheduling one of the package. Tonight I began testing everything out here are some shots from tonight:

Very nice fan on the CM Hyper 212, such a shame I won't be able to see it facing down like that.. I plan on doing a rough install to figure out my cuts.. I may leave it be for a bit then Plasti dip it later on but who knows..

Talking GigE HP ProCurve + Temp Component Install

today is a very good day.

My HP ProCurve 1800-8G finally arrived! With the coming of a WHS box I knew I needed to go GigE and I've always had my eye on this box! Before the switch wired to an ASUS WL-500W I was seeing 13.0MB/sec with dupe and sharing off.. Now I'm seeing bursts to 130MB/sec average transfers at 111MB/sec . I haven't even begun tweaking anything so at this point I'm pretty happy with the speeds. Any WHS gurus have some basic tweaks for transfer performance?

As for the hardware I've done a temporary install of my my components and soon I'll go back and clean it up.. The airflow is good and the temps are very low.. I forgot how quiet a PC could be..

Does a managed switch help transfers by that much?

I went managed for my own application specific needs.. I'm sure you could utilize an unmanaged HP J9077A ProCurve 1400-8G if all you want is GigE and jumbo frame support. Not to mention the 1400-8G is half the price.. not commonly known but VERY powerful box. ProCurve in general is a great line and I really value the power supply being located externally.

The 590 looks so sexy with the CM bays in there!

Now I have to have one....

How heavy is the 590? I have the 690 and it's a tank. It's the main reason I moved my file server to a mATX form factor. If the 590 is light, I may move back to an ATX form factor.

Thanks and I agree the CM bays really bring it together! I was looking for a 4 to 3 and I'd never seen those before.. The finish is very good and the added cooling is welcome.

As for the 590s weight it's very light almost to a fault.. I was kind of surprised at first but when the panels bowed in then I remembered it's a $60 case. In the end it is the absolute perfect case for this application all things considered IMO.
