Do you mean Virtualization?
If so, it's just a technology for a CPU allowing it to better emulate another Operating System.

Essentially virtualization is a way of segregating stuff that is simultaneously run on one set of phsyical hardware. This is done to take better advantage of a pool of resources, and to increase stability/security.
__________________Vague, I know, but virtualization is a very broad topic with many different levels and implimentations. Some articles that may help: http://it.anandtech.com/IT/showdoc.aspx?i=3237 http://www.anandtech.com/it/showdoc.aspx?i=3263 http://it.anandtech.com/IT/showdoc.aspx?i=3583 http://it.anandtech.com/IT/showdoc.aspx?i=3592 That's only a tiny aspect of virtualization.

Id say most importantly virtualization allows you to run multiple instances of an OS that provides stability (you dont have to worry about apps conflicting with one another), and maximizes use of resources. People generally dont want to spend money on hardware they dont need, because they already have the processing power, for the sake of avoiding stability issues. This is virtualizations bread and butter.
Example: You have a windows server but you have a linux app that does exactly what you need it to do. Well, you can buy a new server to run the linux app or you can setup a virtual server that will do the same thing except you can put it on the same hardware you already have.
