Default WHS + Norton Don't Mix

If you install any Norton backup products (i.e. Ghost), be aware that it may stop your WHS Backups from working. I spent 2hrs tracing down the culprit app.... and than another 2hrs cleaning up Norton's mess.

I did proper uninstall of Ghost... issues remained.
I used a Norton Removal Tool... issues remained.
I manually deleted every Registry reference to Ghost or Symantac... issues remain.

It turns out the root cause is the Symantac installs their own Volume Snapshot Service (VSS) or Shadow Copy service on your machine. They set it to a higher priority than the standard Windows one (which WHS uses). Unfortunately, when you uninstall their products, they don't remove this.

To fix this issue, you have to do the following via Command Line:

Quote:
cd ..\windows\system32
Net stop vss
Net stop swprv
regsvr32 ole32.dll
regsvr32 vss_ps.dll
Vssvc /Register
regsvr32 /i swprv.dll
regsvr32 /i eventcls.dll
regsvr32 es.dll
regsvr32 stdprov.dll
regsvr32 vssui.dll
regsvr32 msxml.dll
regsvr32 msxml3.dll
regsvr32 msxml4.dll
net start vss
net start swprvc
Thanks for wasting my time Symantac.

Just proves that anything made by an antivirus company is malware.

Over 30,000 posts and 3k rep and you voluntarily installed a Norton product.
