WHS sees your hard drives all as one storage pool. It creates a ~20gb partition for the OS (C:\ volume) and then treats the rest as just one massive volume (D:\). You won't be creating folders in Windows Explorer like you do on other operating systems. There's a console application which allows you to create top-level shares and then you can create sub-folders within those like normal.

So, that said, you don't need a specific OS drive or anything.

Western Digital Green 1TB WD10EADS PPGB 12.4c $124
Samsung 1TB 7200rpm SATA II HD103UJ PPGB 12.5c $125
Western Digital Green 1.5TB WD15EADS PPGB 13.2c $199
Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB WD1001FALS PPGB 14.5c $145
Western Digital Green 2TB WD20EADS PPGB 18.45c $369
Western Digital RE4-GP 2TB WD2002FYPS PPGB 22.25c $445
Western Digital RE3 1TB WD1002FBYS PPGB 22.5c $225
I'd go with the Green drives to save on power bills...also, if you can find the Green RE2 drives, I'd go with that. I found mine on eBay for a great price but they're hard to come by.

When you add drives, WHS identifies the new drive as part of the storage pool and increases the size accordingly.

Here's a real good thread discussing WHS Folder Duplication vs. RAID: http://social.microsoft.com/Forums/e...c-270ba5dbf511

In the Management Console (client app that you install on your desktop/laptop), there's a checkbox that lets you select individual folders and subfolders to be duplicated. Once that checkbox is selected, the folder is stored on 2 disks. If one disk fails, the copy is still on the other one.

This process is completely behind the scenes and transparent. If you want to see what is duplicated where, this add-in is available: http://mswhs.com/2008/08/06/add-in-d...ion-info-1200/

Also, check out this site for more add-ins. There are some really cool ones available: http://www.whsplus.com/

Yeah, the price tag does suck...but if you can afford it, it's a pretty sweet OS.

Think of it this way - you're not spending as much on the CPU and Mobo so you can take the money you were planning on spending there and put it toward the OS.

WHS is pretty much the cheapest version of Windows you can buy. Not bad for an OS which has much of the functionality (at least as far as is useful in most homes) and the stability of Server 2003.

Are you a student? If so, check out Dreamspark. You can get Server 2003 or 2008 (plus some other goodies) fully licenced for free. Sadly no WHS though.
