My clan has just leased a new box to host our game servers on.
These are the servers we will be hosting on it. :All CSS Servers will be 100 tic: 1-CSS GunGame 24 slot server. 1-CSS GunGame Reverse 24 slot server. 1-CSS GunGame Turbo DM 24 slot server. 2-ET servers. One is 51 slot the other is 40. Here are the quick hardware specs. Dual Xeon E5405 Quad core CPU's. 4GB DDR2-667(will be upgraded to 8GB later) Dual 15,000 RPM SAS drives in RAID 1 The OS installed is Windows Server 2008 x64. My question is would we be better off using VMware to run multiple virtual machines? I would set it up with one virtual machine per server. If I were what OS should I install on the virtual machines? What amount of system resources should I allocate to each VM? This type of configuration makes sense in my head. Would I be better off just running the servers off the native OS instead? Thanks for any input you may have

Evil Smurfs.
We have the servers mentioned above as well as a standard play CSS 34 slot server. Hopefully we will have the resources to get a L4D server or two going.

The deal we are getting on this box is incredible. Eight IP's and a full Gbps up and down. Hard to pass up on it.

This is a entire box. The FPS per instance will be dictated by the OS and configuration after it's set up.
When you rent a game server rated at xxx amount of FPS you are renting a virtual machine on a box hosting other servers.

As long as you can run the CSS servers all on the same OS then it would be a lot better. VMs actually add quite a bit of overhead, and you should avoid them if possible for applications where processing and I/O speed are important - such as game servers. With just 5 game servers on that kind of hardware it should be fine either way, but it's still better not to.
