I'm not taking a huge machine here, far from it. Something along the lines of ...
E5200 (with a mild undervolt to keep it cool) Cheap G31/P35 motherboard (need plenty of Sata and IDE ports) + A lot of PCI and PCI-E controller cards for more HDD's 2X2GB ram Would an E5200 have enough grunt to run 24/7 with a lot of drives in different places and what RAID would be best to use or could it just be JaBoD setup? Could I get away with a cheaper cpu? Or is a Quadcore a must have. This is just a machine to host personal sites (some people still have them lol), and maybe a few bloggers with light media. Doable? I've done some server stuff before but not semi-pro, and not with my own money

Unless you're planning on running some power hungry web apps you'll be more than fine wtih an E5200.
All you really need to worry about is the HDD speed. Look for ones with high IOPS. Caviar Blacks are great, and the RE3 drives are even better. You won't really need much of a RAID setup unless you've got quite a demand on your server (100 concurrent users or more at a time). I'd say just go with RAID1 to keep everything safe.

Sounds good. Really need to make the cheapest possible machine, and jam as much storage space on it as possible lol
The lowest priced 1TB drives I found were 50GBP-ish. RAID1 is the mirror isn't it? the data goes on both disks so if one gets screwed the data is mirrored on the other.

How many terabytes can go upto before the poor little cpu starts to groan lol
edit: I was planning on having 3 or 4 in the long run.

1 - How many users are accessing the files 2 - Your internet speeds 3 - The type of RAID, when not using a dedicated card Number 1 and 2 are obviously low (unless you have some sort of enterprise grade connection to your home), and 3 only really applies to onboard RAID5 - which you should avoid at all costs.

what speeds does that line offer? 1 or 2 pci-e 1x intel cards will offer a good performance offload from the cpu.

lol I can't find the BT one now :/
Virgin do £15.00/£20 after 3 months 10Mb UNLIMITED, BUT!!! I'll have to look for BT lines again because all the roads round here are concrete ffs, so the cable companies can't lay anything (easily). Kinda stuck with crappy phone line cable, I get about 4mb/s download and 1mb/s upload on my basic package at the momment.

If it's less than 100Mbps upload then you have nothing to worry about.
