So I have a server sitting here that I'd like to put to some use. It'll be running Windows Server 2008 R2. I've searched through Google but the information I've found is scattered/non-specific.

I figure that the less I load into my primary machine, the more efficient it'll be. I try out and load tons of apps and I'd also like to have access to these with my laptop or netbook without having to use local hw to run this stuff.

So, any guidance would be appreciated.

You do this with the Terminal Services role.

The only problem is that it only works with certain applications. I can already tell you that anything with 3D rendering is out. And with things like MS Office you'll need a volume license.

Also, if you plan on having more than one PC open up server side apps at the same time, make sure you have enough RAM for it.

Great info, thanks Manyak. I already knew that about the 3D apps but I'm not looking to game remotely so we're good. As far as running Office remotely, I didn't even consider that until you mentioned - I might be able to get a VLA from technet but I'll have to check to make sure.

Terminal services, got it, thanks a bunch. Do you know of any guides?

The best I can do is just give you the MS Technet Guide.

It's very simple though, it shouldn't take you more than 10 or 15 mins to set up your first app.
