No server board offers overclocking options that I am aware of, and if you found one I doubt any will get you close to 4.5GHz. Even so, 2U is really restrictive so no way you could do it on air. Even water would be tough.

Better would be 4 Xeons, running at stock...

Servers are intended to "serve" - they need to have high reliability and often 24/7 operation. Thus, overclocking and servers don't mix, especially if it's a mission-critical machine.

Anything can be a server fellas... even a high clocked machine. As far as I can tell his only requirement is that it runs in a 2-3U 19" rack.

Are your expansion slot requirements really PCI?

Just grab any X58 motherboard that meets your expansion desires. I doubt you can fit 4 full height expansion slots in a 2U chassis, so you may have to go with 3U.

1)do you know if the Supermicro boards are able to overclock?

4) PCI-E is exactly what I am after.
As someone else already told, the server boards (of any brand) aren't created for overclocking. Mine MB (a Tyan for 5400 series) has almost no options for overclock.

If you are interested in PCI-E, there are several of MB with a lot of 16x PCI-E.

This Tyan board has 4 x 16x PCI-E 2.0 slots with full lanes.
This Supermicro board has 7x 16x PCI-E slots with 8x lanes.

Here are 3U chassis. Just pick one... The cheapest looks like a decent option.

If you're going to go the external radiator route, you simply cut holes in the back of the chassis and run tubes attached to your CPU waterblock out the back with quick disconnect couplings. You can choose to have the pump internal or external (I'd go with external, in the event you ever wanted to add more machines to this kit.

Thanks, think I will give the single socket a shot, probably a Supermicro 3 U case, using a Intel 975 Extreme. PCI-E is what I am after anyway; so no problems here. Any advice on the best board for overclocking, cooling (water or air) and memory? I know I pretty much asking you guys, "please advise on the whole system". Can''t offer anything back, apart from respect credits

Is the I975 the best processor to reach 4.5 Ghz?

BTW Reliability comes after performance (using hot standy)

Cheers,

Speedy Gonzales

you can grab some deltas for air cooling this. You need to make sure you have optimum airflow if you want such high clocks running all the time. You might have to make your own air channels inside the case, i'll try and find an example

example of building your own ducts for a case for optimum air cooling:
http://www.silentpcreview.com/forums...&view=previous

obviously I wouldn't follow this to the letter, but this gives you some ideas on what to do.
