Default 2U server, 4.5 Ghz I7 975e

Hi there,

Been browsing for a while searching for the right components for a server that needs to have the following specs:

- 2x Intel I7 975 Extreme running at least 4.5 Ghz
- Air cooling preferred.
- 4 free PCI slots
- No HDD required
- Graphics, anything will do
- Memory 1600 Mhz, 6x 2 GB unbuff mem.

Any help will do. Costs are not a concern to me,

Can anybody point me in the right direction,

Cheers,

Speedy

What is this server going to be used for? Attaining 4.5Ghz on air is going to be a challenge.

If I understand correctly, your requests are impossible to meet.
If you need 2 CPU, if I remember correctly, You can't do this with normal i7 processors. You need the DP series Xeon processors (the 5500 series is equivalent to the i7).
Other problems are:
1) the Xeon boards are usually oriented to servers and the overclock isn't a choice (you can use only the standard frequency)
2) the memory for Xeon boards is usually DD3 ECC Registered
3) I don't know the specs for the intel server chipset, but I think that the max RAM speed possible is 1333 (and with limitations. Some Tyan boards permits the 1333 speed ONLY if you use a single dimm for each channel).
4) the 5500 arch is new and is difficult find 4 old PCI in this type of MB (but probably you can find PCI-X, compatible with PCI). You can only find PCI-E.

Tyan (a good brand of MB) don't offers any MB with more of 2 PCI.
Supermicro has some boards with 3 PCI or PCI-X:

Thanks, all of you for the swift reply. Sorry, error, 5500 series, that's what I am after. On your other notes,

1)do you know if the Supermicro boards are able to overclock?
2) Thanks
3) Thanks again
4) PCI-E is exactly what I am after.

Cheers,

Needed for extremely fast calculations where processor frequency is key. If air is not an option, well, anything else will do.

I'll go ahead and say this to save you some time. Almost ALL sever boards offer little or no overclocking options. Server's are not for overclocking, they are for stable, reliable 24/7 use. Sorry.

Yeah folks haven't been successful with 2 CPU Nehalem overclocking. Motherboard manufacturers just don't offer any options.

If the processor speed is critical you could build a single slot 1366 platform in a 2U chassis. I would be very concerned with keeping it cool however.

Could you have an external radiator?

Yes I could, air cooling is preferred, however anything will do. At the end I am willing to drop the dual socket requirement, so single would be fine. Frequency is key. Can someone recommend a setup? I am willing to ruin a processor here and there. It needs to run in 19" cabinets, even going to 3U would be an option.

Cheers,

Speedy
