Heya,

Do you really need it to be an FTP server? That implies you are going to connect to it really remotely. That could take a long time to transfer files depending on your connection speeds and how much data you need to backup. If that is the case, and you truly want an FTP server here, FileZilla Server is super easy to setup. Download. Install. Run. Settings->User->Add. Make a user account. If on the same network, just type in that address in any browser or FTP client to login. Or if it's remote, get your laptop's IP address with whatsmyip.com and use that as the address to connect to. If you go that route, make sure windows firewall or your router (or both) allow port 21 access.

That's complicated though compared to just sharing some space on you laptop via the network.

All you need to do is get on your laptop, make some space, or just select any directory. Right click on it. Click sharing. Share it on the network. Go to control -> system. Where you see computer name and all that, make sure you're workgroup is the same on both machines (not always necessary, but depends on what OS you're using).

Very best,

Heya,

It will work with virtually all operating systems. Just make sure that when you create the share that you also pay attention to permissions. If it's just you accessing, allow all the permissions you want. You'll see this when you select a folder on your laptop, right click it, select sharing (or go to properties and then advanced sharing). Share it, set permissions (in the same window). And then browse the network, you should see your shared folder pop up.

Very best,

you don't need a ftp at all.
you can simply make a file share in windows.
goto the folder/drive of choice, right click < properties < sharing < advanced sharing < alow share < set permissions < and voila its done.

Why not just take the disk out of the laptop, direct attach it to your desktop & copy stuff that way? As it is a 250GB disk I assume it is SATA, so the connections are identical to desktop SATA devices.

This will be much quicker to copy the data (and easier to set up). If you want a server you can build one, but just for backup for a few days it will probably be better for you to move the disk.

reason being most probably because this member wants help with backing up data without fiddling with screw drivers and wires, and having the room for errors that can have such as dropping the hdd on accident and losing all the data and other such things that can happen when taking parts out of a computer

have you ever thought of making a second partition on your hdd then copying all your files onto it? Thats what i've done for the last 3 formats and it works like a charm.

Did he say he didn't want to mess with wires? He admits to being a noob when it comes to networking, but is apparently about to mod his case (check his sig) so is probably at least a bit handy with a screwdriver. It sounded to me like what he wanted was the easiest way for him to copy his data to his laptop. The easiest & fastest way to do that, especially if you have limited network knowledge but a bit of hardware know-how, is to move the disk between the machines. And why would he be any more likely to drop the disk out of the laptop than he is to drop the whole laptop? Either way the HDD is likely to be dead, but at least the rest of his laptop would survive.

If he is stuck with a wireless connection to his router, copying his data over the network could take many times longer than a hardwired network connection and infinitely longer than a direct SATA connection, if it even manages to complete the process at all. He may be limited to 10/100mbps speeds on his network. He also could have multiple, difficult for a beginner to diagnose problems (ip conflicts, firewall problems, simple file sharing problems) that may stump him if he goes the network route.

I'm just trying to offer another option, so that the OP can find the best solution for the OP for his situation. No need to try and be a know-it-all...
