I am building a file server for home where i can take my 2 1TB hdd's out of my current gaming i7 monsta and put them into my C2D E6850 machine (has no PSU,case, or GPU atm)
the specs are as follows on the server atm: Intel Core 2 Duo E6850 @ 3.6GHz OCZ DDR2 PC2-8500 Reaper HPC 2x2GB ASUS P5E X38 WD green 500GB 7,200RPM PSU: none - want this GPU: none - Wanted GTS250 -GOT Gainward GTX 260+ Golden Sample CASE: none - wanted Coolermaster CM 690 Pure Black - got it! these parts are from my gaming rig, i upgraded to core i7 ![]() this server will also occasionally host servers for LAN parties such as cod4, cod5, killing floor, crysis, trackmania nations, ect. i may also occasionally play some games on it, it will host file sharing most probably on the 2 x 1tb hdd's ill put in there, the filesystem will run on a 500gb Seagate barracuda. my question is what applications should i get also like a proxy, LDAP/active directory,WDS/RIS, Proxy, VPN. i got those application names from a different thread from Manyak, i thought that these are great applications that i could run. EDIT:changed the to get hardware to equvalent of what was suggested I'm going for the CM 690 pure black as it's only $20 more than the CM 690 EDIT: got the CM 690 Pure Black, and a GTX 260+ this will be my spare gaming pc as well as my server now i only need a PSU

you would just need a basic PSU like a corsair 450w, you won't need too much power for a basic server.
you would just need a cheap GPU for basic gaming, maybe a 4770 for future proofing. You would only need a basic case but this is up to you, i personally reccomend the cm 690 I'm not into networking as much so maybe someone else will help you with your questions.

Playing games on a PC that you use as a server isn't a good idea if you care to keep it secure and reliable. I say dump that GPU and use the money to buy real network cards for both the server and your PC (Intel Pro/1000 PT, Broadcom 5708/5709, Chelsio, among many others). I don't know what Australia's prices are with them, but over here in the states you can often find them for $50 or less on ebay. And of course, if you don't have a gigabit switch you'll definitely want one.
As for those other services, they are all run through Windows Server 2008, or a server distro of Linux or Unix (Redhat, Solaris, and a million others though I've never tried them). If you're a student you can get multiple copies of Windows Server for 19 USD, which if you're not familiar with *nix and networking is the easiest way to do it.

i already have a gigabit switch i bought last week just before my birthday/lanparty.
it is a TPLink TL-SG1016 16 port Gigabit Ethernet Switch (rackmountable and unmanaged). would i really see any peformance gain in net speeds when i already got dual gigabits in my x58 machine, and a gigabit in my x38? i will either use redhat or windows server

Most onboard NICs are super-crap Realtec devices, which are truely awful. Next up are the Marvell NICs, which are much better but still pretty poor. Some of the onboard Broadcom's are ok, but they are pretty rare on desktop baords. Intel's chipsets are miles ahead of anything you are likely to find onboard, but still lack a few features of their dedicated counterparts. |

Do you have any info on the Intel 82973L NIC?

I believe the 82973 NIC is a multi-port version of the 82573 chipset - which is excellent, although a generation or 2 old now. I have the 82573 on my S3000AH server board and it runs very well indeed. It can hit 100MB/s to an Intel Pro/1000 MT (the only other type of (decent) NIC I currently have set up). The 'L' indicates it is the low power version of the chipset. I assume this is the ethernet controller on your Fuzzy board? If so it would be ideal running a fileserver & router combined on a single board (if it supports virtualisation to separate the routing & the serving). I doubt you will be able to get any significant increases in performance in a home environment from any add-in NICs. Hope this helps. |
