Okay well it's for my uncle and he needs to share files between 2 to 3 computers, they are all pretty much in the same rooms so they'll be connected through ethernet cables and the files aren't too big. He has a P4 that's a little old, and the information is critical and he doesn't want anything failing down the road. So I'm thinking a little celeron 430, gig of ram, asus mobo, 640gb in raid 1, and a corsair power supply. So he has a modem and a router with enough slots for the pc's. They are all using XP too. What would be the easiest way of setting this up? Also I can use norton on all the PC's to back up by itself on the server right? Lol I feel dumb because I've been trying to figure this out for 2 days and I'm still not sure, I just need a little reassurance, it's not for me so I'm a little sketchy about it, thanks guys!

go to microsofts site and look into sharing capabilities and setup everything as a network

So really you're just looking for a NAS (Network Attached Storage)
It's not complicated at all. Cheaper way of doing what you need to is here below. Give all the PCs names, and the same workgroup. On the "server" Add a folder to the drive that he can put all his documents into. Share the folder and enable network users to change files. Right click my computer in the start menu and map network drive, find the folder and your done. Do that to A,B, and C. Good luck bud, any questions feel free to ask. Keep us updated.

If you want to get fancy you can check out this.
I've never played with it to much, but I've heard it's great.

So no special software needed? Also I'm just giving him my old 2.1 athlon and a gig of ram, so all he'd need is a mobo and a power supply. Since this isn't a server but a network attached storage, does the computer need to be a little beefier or would a single core be fine? Thanks again, appreciate it

a single core is completely fine for that
I'm currently running a fairly busy web forum, wiki, java nightly builder and SQL based application on a 2.4 P4

no special software, just a matter of titling and setting up the computers
EDIT: but if you are building a comp and need a OS, id go with the FreeNAS

Wait I think I just thought of something else, there is 3 computers and all need to share information, if my uncles pc is the main one, can't his pc work as a normal pc and still be the NAS/server and share everything with the other 2 pc's but everything gets backed up on his pc? It'd be cheaper than getting a NAS or getting new pieces for the old pc. Thanks again guys, sorry for switching the plan so much.
